I've been perusing this forum for over a year now and only recently have begun to post questions. I appreciate the answers so far. Basically my dilemma is this. I want to drive a TRUCK! I've been wanting to get in the trucking industry for about 4 years now, but the time hasn't been right, until later this year. I have a good job, I'm a chef. I've worked in kitchens for 15 years and have been relatively succesfull. I make more than most of the salaries I've seen posted on the forum. But I don't care about the money. I'm not happy in my current career. Working as a chef is very stressfull, have to make employees happy, make money for the company, labor %, food cost, guest satisfaction, yadda yadda yadda. And it's only FOOD! I've read on here that trucking is a tough job, but alot of jobs out there are too. People have to make a living somehow, and driving trucks to people outside of the industry seems "cool", excuse the term but it's true. I've loved trucks since I was a kid, my father owns a concrete construction company and has owned a few dump trucks. Anyway, sorry for the long post. Just wanted to share my story as I venture into the truck driving world, however that may be.
Thanks,
J

Good luck on your new adventure i just got into trucking my self very rewarding work but it gets stressful on the fam. And in return gets to you, my opinion is to not drive a mud truck from what i here it sucks get into flat beding lol

Have you thought about a food truck, best of both worlds. You get to do what you know best, cook, and drive a truck around. Just a thought.

Crazy is crazy does..lol.. Being in Florida like me, I can tell you it's going to be pretty tough finding a job that gets you home. If you have a family prepare your self and your loved ones for that. If you have no tie downs then trucking is a great job. Worst case if you figure trucking is not for you, you can always find another chef position. Good luck man!

Getting lost with 80 feet of vehicle inside a city you've never been near, impossible delivery times,DOT checkpoints and scalehouses daily, traffic jams, constant stupid 4 wheeler tricks, belligerent shippers and dispatchers, and being away from home and family for weeks at a pop are also rather stressful. And it doesn't pay near what you're probably making. So think long and hard before you take the jump my friend, because believe me when I tell you that it's definitely not an episode of BJ and the Bear out there....
. Good luck regardless of your choice.

Yes you are crazy, but if you go to driving a truck you will be in a good group of people! We have to be crazy to do this especially with the starting wages as you start to get time under your belt, You being down in Florida I'm not sure how many of the beginner companies will take you? They may, I will wait and see what others say about that, I always advise anyone coming into this industry to pick a company that you have done some research on, you will want to stay there at least a year, then the other doors will start opening up for you, You can certainly get in on flatbedding but are you going to go to a school and then take your CDL to a company? Or are you going to need to go to a training company? I wish you good luck.

All i can tell you is that I have done lots of different things for work and trucking is one of the most stressful. Mostly because of dumb 4 wheelers, winter driving and dealing with some of the idiots in shipping and receiving....
Having said that it is also most rewarding job just because of the challenge it presents and no one is there to tell you when you can take your break or lunch. Also the pay can be pretty good if you can find a right fit for you...
After all i say give it a shoot you MAY like it and if not there is always kitchen you can get back to (no pun intended)
