I am suspecting that 2 of my drivers (coincidentally, they're buddies) are stealing fuel. They are getting VERY crappy mpg (4.0-4.5mpg), while the truck's ECM is showing 5.7-6.5mpg. When confronted, they don't have anything to say, other than "I don't know what's going on, I'm driving the way I always do".

So, is it possible that there's another problem keeping the mpg different from what the ECM is showing, or am I getting robbed?

I swapped one of my efficient drivers into the other truck, and he started getting 6.3s all day in the truck that the previous driver was doing 4.5mpg.

Bad driver? Thief driver? Either way, looks like I need to fire both of them.

Looks like you do need to replace those drivers. If you can put someone else in the truck and they are getting better mileage, then there is something fishy going on. I wouldn't think there would be that marked of a change in fuel mileage that quick if it was an issue of the way the truck was being driven.

Had the same situation here. We know what our truck can do mpg wise. Had a driver in it that was always about to run out of fuel, always needed more fuel money. He claimed the truck was only getting around 4 mpg. After the first of the year, my husband started teaming with him. On the very first run, the truck averaged 9 mpg! Hmmm! Driver then started the "I don't really like teaming" routine, Think he didn't like teaming because it really put a cramp in what he was doing and telling us. Suffice it to say, he's history.

I drive for a fleet owner and have driven for two other owner ops in my career. Why there are drivers who do this is beyond me. I've had 3 different people try to get me to sell them fuel in the last 6 months.

One of those was a guy in a newer Chevy 3/4 ton pick up with a Harley in the bed. He said he was a driver and had just quit Western outta Denver. He was trying to get home in Ohio and was outta money. This happened in Terre Haute. I said no and told him he was close enough to home he could ride that bike. Nevermind the fact that it was December. :biggrin_255:

I hear guys on the CB all the time selling stolen fuel and it ticks me off. I'll usually say something to 'em, but most times it's not worth it.

As an owner's operator, I realize that stealing from my boss ain't gonna do anything for me other than putting me outta work. Then of course there's the moral and legal delimma. A couple hundred bucks ain't worth me being deemed untrustworthy or any legal problems that may arise.

I did a solid 8 MPG on this trip but I was fairly light and wasn't in much of a hurry...Runnin' about 65 to 68.

I was pretty happy with that.

if it is detroits--you can go in ecm--and start a new trip--it will show your mpg and the fuel burned while moving and idle fuel as well---i imagine you can do this with all the other engines as well---but i am only really familiar with detroit--
why they would do that is beyond me---well i can see he wants more money--but to steal like that is stupid--i would always take pride in getting the best fuel mileage possible---always like a game trying to better it-----i found it very easy to get 9 or more--but generally the company would take a dim view if i left the trailer in the yard
