I do not condone drug use in CDL holders, although we all know it goes on every day and there are some very lucky SoB's out here.
You were called in for a wizz quiz. Had you taken it, you would have popped positive...and then the company would have the option to send you through treatment and work with you on it. However...you opted to refuse a drug test. This does not stay on your record for three years. It's there permanently. I can name two companies that consider this the "kiss of death" for your career: Swift and Prime.
If you want to drive again, you will have to go with one of those small-time rat companies with crappy equipment and not much of a safety department. Learn how to fudge a log book because that's what will be expected of you. You may consider a chipper or log truck company. No offense to those guys, but there are some doozies in that biz.
Maybe trucking just isn't your thing. Try dispatching.

The man never said he smoked while driving or operating any vehicle.
Start with some of the smaller companies in your area. All son't lie about it when asked. But you would have been better to have taken the test. There are ways of handling the situation and keeping your job also, but quitting or refusing the test is not one of them. -
This would be a reason for us all to roll another one... You might have to do a rehab just to offset the offense.losttrucker Thanks this. -
Not to hijack the tread, but I will answer and be done with it. If Prime and Swift were the bottom feeder companies you illustrate them to be, they could not afford to bypass drivers who have problems with their records. I'm just sayin'.

I've pretty much made known my stance that the drug laws as they are today SUCK. That being said, anybody who has a CDL and ignores the drug laws, ignores the fact that they may lose their license and choose to use those drugs anyway. . .
Well let's just say it isn't a very bright thing to do. -
It would have been better if he had called the HR department and told them he had a [problem and wanted rehab.
I also do not condone drugs and trucks but we have all gotten our selves into situations were we should not have been. I don't know of any companies that do not include drug test as step 1 or 2 in the hire process... -
Diesel Dave Thanks this.

would I have any prospects if I went and bought my own truck?
-
Maybe. Maybe not. The insurance companies and the lawyers are why you can't find work now. Neither will change if you buy a truck and lease it on with a motor carrier. They will have the same requirements for drivers as they do for their company trucks as far as drug use and MVR is concerned...plus there are additional requirements for whatever truck you buy.
If you get your own authority, you will have to find an insurance provider who will take you...and you will STILL have to participate in a drug testing program as an independent.
