When I was at Great Lakes converting from AE (Aviation Electrician's Mate) to FC (Fire Controlman), there was a first class BT (Boiler Technician) who lived across from me. He was converting to GS (Gas Turbine Systems) as all the old boiler platforms went into extinction.

For those that don't know, engineering types in the navy take pride in the term "snipe". A snipe is any manly man engineering type who works a real man's job down in the hole. Snipe is synonymous with "tough guy".

So when my neighbor would rib me with the term "twidget", I made sure to call him a Gay Snipe. :D

I was on the USS New Jersey (BB-62) and plenty of BT's on there. Some were in their 60's that were brought back on active duty.

    So here's the latest.....

I went in to Senn Freight Lines in Newberry on Monday. Met the recruiter I'd spoken with on the phone. He offered and I accepted. I start orientation on Monday.

I gave my company real short notice, but oh well. Today, my VP called me and was nicer than she's ever been in 8 years. From her tone, I could tell she was leading to a counter offer, not even knowing what I was leaving to do. I didn't wait for it. No matter what it was, I wouldn't be interested. I just pretty quickly and politely informed her I wasn't leaving because I was dissatisfied, I wasn't going to a competitor and in fact my new job was even in the same industry. I told her I needed to chase a dream.

They couldn't replace my production with a new hire in a year's time, much less with a two week notice. She was clearly concerned about the revenue that's going to vanish like a fart in the wind when I go, but that's not my problem. Without me soliciting it, she ponied up a significant raise for me a couple of years ago but then they restructured bonus policies that all but negated the extra income I would have taken home. It seemed like the harder I red-lined my motor, the less it paid off.

It's just time to do something for me and in a few years it'll be me that's in complete control of what I earn.

I didn't read this whole thread. I plan on it but kind of busy right now. But anyways @Razororange said something back on Aug. 11 that really got me thinking. "Flatbedders are the most helpful and tight knit in the industry" not his exact words but that's what I got out of it. I haul cars now and it really seems like a carhauler would just as soon run ya down as look at ya!! Maybe he thinks he'll get a better load if you're out of the way!! Is this true about flatbed?? I've been really struggling back and forth about doing flat or step in my own wheels. Just afraid to leave what I know.. Anyhow not sure if this is ok to post here. I don't want to hijack a thread. And to the OP good luck to you! I hope it is all you hope it will be!!

That ship was obsolete as soon as WWII ended. Lots of gray haired sailors on there when I served. Most were "snipes" that knew the 600 psi steam system and had been recalled for active duty. Some had retired and some saw this as a chance to finish and do 20 years. Those older guys were really laid back and easy to deal with. One was a Boatswains Mate E-6 and had done 12 years and got out to be a trucker and had been out a long time. He was an owner-operator flatbedder. He volunteered for recall to active duty so he could do another 8 years and get a pension. Back then a Navy vet could call his old detailer and say "Hey, this civilian life sucks, can you help me out?" The detailer would say, "Put it in writing and mail it to me. Just a couple of sentences saying you volunteer." That's what I did and he sent a set of orders to my house. Had to go to Orlando,FL for a new seabag and quickie orientation, then to Long Beach,CA to the ship.

During the Vietnam War I saw 1st division hollystone those decks. We were at the same pier in the Philippines. No thank you, I'll have a San Miguel and a bar girl instead.

I was an OTR driver at the time running 48 states. Really bored and needed some excitement in my life.
'84 when the ship just returned from graves detail in Beirut,Lebanon. They fired a few rounds then sorted through the rubble of the Marine barracks.
Hey, I can still pass a physical and my youngest child is eleven.
