After talking at length with the school's recruiter and director I decided to attend a nationally recognized truck driving school. I was up front about the fact that I have felonies dating to 1987 and 1992 as well as a dui in 2000. They assured me that I would have no problem getting a job in the industry. They also told me I would have 2-3 offers by the end of the second week. I was given 30 day notice to vacate where I'm staying August 1 so I figured I would put my belongings in storage and live on the road and visit family when routes permitted. I've almost completed 3 weeks and have been rejected by Werner, Stephens, Schneider and Swift is doing an investigation. Pretty ominous. Needless to say the stress and class size has prevented me from being able to properly learn backing maneuvers so I am nowhere near ready to test out on schedule. Labor day steals another day and I am essentially homeless as of this weekend.
What can I do? HELP please!!!

How many guys do you get to a truck there? My school, there'd be 3 to 5 each, we'd usually be killing time arguing who's turn it was next (long course). I can't imagine you're going to get the kind of answers that you'll find helpful here, go talk to the people at your school and explain your backing problems.

Either way, you'll need a living arrangement, even if you become super trucker tomorrow, it's going to take a while even for an orientation.

Depends on the felonies. You may need to try less than desirable options like CRST and Carolina Cargo.

Best way to go here.....felonies and dui...not too good I'm afraid. But not impossible to overcome though. Contact Carolina Cargo they run west coast mostly, but be prepared to run hard and not make a real good wage. but it will get you started. As far as your testing goes..you paid to be taught , right? Tell them you need some extra time on the backing....

Housing is your first issue. If you don't want to have a permanent residence right now, you could try one of the weekly extended stay motels. In fact, some motels offer weekly rental rates, anyway. A single felony is a problem in this industry, as is a dui. Multiple felonies are more of a problem. Some will hire drivers after 10 years have passed without incidence. It will be a numbers game as to finding a company that will hire you. Your school should be able to help you with placement. In fact, I would insist on it if they told you the felonies would not be a problem. I would tell them that unless they can help you find a position that you want a complete refund of your schooling. You will need to knock on doors until one opens. Check the company listings on this and other trucking websites. They should list the basic hiring requirements of most of the major carriers. They also list their restrictions on felonies. You may be able to find something, but it may take a lot of effort on your part. If you are having problems backing, that is an issue you need to take up with your school.

Carolina Cargo and Paschalll Truck Lines will hire you after you graduate from CDL school.

Hey joesmoothdog If I recall most companies wont hire if the felony is drug related murder ect. Look up requirements for a T.W.I.C. card as the requirements seem to go together in another words if you cant get T.W.I.C. card they probaly wont hire you. Good luck

Are you screwed? Well with the way your story sounds in a nutshell, yea your screwed. New guys ALWAYS keep this in mind. No school will ever guarantee you a job no matter how dirty or clean your record. They only tell you that to give you false hopes so you will get in there and give them your money. If you are able to aquire and hold a CDL but have a bad history, most likely no company is going to touch you and your pretty much screwed. This isn't saying that you can't drive a truck because there is another option and that is buying your own truck and trailer and running under your own insurance and authority but what good would it do because you know nothing about the industry and how this game works. You need to learn from being a company driver first before you try to take the bull by the horns or yours just asking for trouble. All I can say is keep trying. Someone might hire you eventually even if its a crap rock bucket job that pays minimum wage. In the mean time you gotta keep your head up and tend to whats important first. A place to live and some type of income, then tend to trucking as time permits. In the mean time that will allow you to save some cash. Living on the road can get expensive but I'm assuming your behind on rent so if you can't make the basics of keeping up with a homestead, how do you plan on making it on the road? I mean a company is gonna required that you have a place of residence/permanent address and some won't just except a P.O. Box. Then think, you won't always be in that truck. It gets small after a while.

What if something happens per say an accident and you loose your job, well your stuck without a place to go other than a hotel if you even have the cash after bus fair and all that good stuff. Your job is never guaranteed because you don't know when you wake up if your going to have a good day or some ### hat cuts you off and you roll or jack knife your truck. It happens every day many times over in this country. Just from my speculation but me thinks you need to sit down and get your priorities in order and reevaluate your situation. Things work in steps and you can't jump from step 3 to step 9 and expect it to work.

I would start by finding a place to live, a job, then start working on seeing about getting your record cleaned up and reapply. In which case you may have to take a refresher course but that is to be expected because you jumped the gun by going to school without any form of knowledge other than the false B.S. that school feed you just to get you in the door and take your bank roll. Don't take me the wrong way as I don't mean anything bad by what I'm saying but you did mess up. You snooze, you loose. I just see it as your looking at trucking as a way out of your situation and it a way out of your current situation but in reality most likely, it simply won't happen. But when and eventually it can happen you should be much more educated and have done more for yourself being the biggest of all is staying out of trouble.

You didn't mention what the other felonies are. If you don't wanna mention thats your business but I can tell ya if they are for theft of any kind, you can hang it up and kiss any thought of trucking goodbye because no company will touch a thef unless you can get your own equipment and work for yourself.

have you ever been arrested ? no no no ...the answer is always no....Lie, and get the job...this is your only option...Trucking companies have no problem lying to drivers, you should have no problem lying back....
