i mean S--T, even the Japanese aren't really asking for much if anything after what they've been thru.
So really, it comes down to an analysis of the person's life; How the hell does a person get into a situation where they gotta beg for money or food?
If someone comes up to you at a truckstop asking for food, rides, money etc. the first thing should be suspicion. Report ALL panhandlers to truckstop managment or security.
Panhandler=loser
Do not give money. Giving food is acceptable ONLY if you were going to throw it away anyways.
Am i the only one that will buy a bum food?

Down and out is a myth,. People are in their situations because of decisions they make in life. All the rest, all the fables, excuses, explanations are fallacies to cover that fact. People are very adept at making up fantasies to cover their uselessness.
God didn't help me.
I am to weak.
I have no luck.
Someone took from me.
I couldn't help it.
I have no skills.
The government screwed me.
All BS fantasies to cover the fact they expect someone to give a flying fig if they stop sucking oxygen. News flash no one does.
Yes there were times in my life I had less. I labored and now I have more. No mystical explanation. No charity. No begging. No excuses. Just pure love of my life and willingness to labor to stay alive and earn everything I have.
I will always offer the opportunity to labor to someone who has a skill I need. Those that do not can adapt to have a skill or perish. It is a simple choice. To live or to die. Some leave that choice in the hands of others by expecting charity. I believe the choice to live or die is theirs. Charity in the sense mystics use it is more harmful than good. Supplying a man leaves him at your mercy. That is immoral.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Tazz and scottied67 Thank this.

I pick up canned goods at Sams a couple of times a year and make little lunch bags with an assortment of food and a spoon. I always keep 5 or 6 bags in the truck with me and replace them as I give them away. I never give them money. I figure even if they are addicts at least they will eat that day. It made me feel good when my 16 year old son took some of my food bags to keep in his truck to give away as well.

I try to sum up each situation--and I have been wrong--but it's the kind of wrong I can live with--LOL
I also usually (if it seems realistic)offer to buy/food gas etc--that usually clears it up quick--I have filled peoples gas tanks--and bought food--but I try to be wary--although the off ramp types are my favorite--Got any spare change--No but I have $100 burning a hole in my pocket for someone to do about 2 hours work and unload my trailer--at this place down the street--would a hundred help you out?
man can't you just give me a dollar or two?--nope sorry--my give a damns bustedrjones56, scottied67, Dave75 and 1 other person Thank this. -
90% of them around here are scamming so I don't usually. Like the guy I see once a week at the same gas station that tells me the same story about how he just got out of prison yesterday and needs money to get home. Or the guy that sits on the off ramp on 15 that according to his sign is trying to get to Vegas and needs cash. He's been trying to get there for 10 months, don't think it's happening.
You have to watch out for the guys asking to put money on their pump for gas. Attendant at one of the stations told me that after you leave they just come in and ask for the money off the pump. People fall for it though because it seems more legit when they tell you to put money on a pump.
If someone is straight with me though, I usually will throw some money their way. I've had a couple guys come up and say, "Hey, I just need some smokes and I'm broke." At least they're honest about it.
The guys I see going up and down the street everyday looking for cans and bottles I'll help out usually. At least they're doing something. I always have a crap load of mostly empty water bottles in the bed of my truck as I always carry cases of water with me for offroading in the desert. I let them clean out the bottles out of the back when it gets filled up. -
'olhand Thanks this.

the one and only way i will ever buy a bum food is if i can tell they are a veteran....even then, im sure ive been scammed before, but ill take that risk

Most new drivers when they first get exposed to this other world will feel compelled to help. Over time you see so many con games, you build defenses against it. I'm like olhand, I'll evaluate each situation. But you better have a pretty good story to get anything off me. I rather help a broke down motorist, a fellow trucker, a Christmas toy drive or a soup kitchen.
I had one less fortunate man I helped one day. I gave him a ride, bought him dinner and when we got to Baltimore TA I couldn't get the guy out of my truck. I was really starting to feel uncomfortable. I finally bought him another hotdog and literally had to kick him out. That day broke me from being the shiny knight on the road. Most are con artist.
I was on a backed up ramp one day and observed a beggar throw his sign behind a bush. He walked over to the C-store next door and got into a newer Maxima and drove off. I guess it was lunch time.
My favorite was a guy driving around the parking lot begging for gas money. I leaned on his drivers window and seen he had a half tank. I told him he should be walking instead of driving if he needed gas that bad. Lazy bum, lol.
You all want to do something good and warm at heart to something that is real, go to the southernpride thread and give teddy bear some money to help mrs. sp out. -
I forgot, the one armed lot lizard was pretty hilarious. She jumped up on my truck. I honestly thought she was a he. She asked if I wanted company and I nicely declined. I haven't noticed the arm thing yet. She then asked me for a cigarette. I opened my pack and she just looked at it, lol. She then showed me her nub and I took the cigarette out and stuck it in her mouth. I even had to light it for her and then she jumped off and went to the next truck.
