swift was one of the first ones I tried. I really wanted to go with them after talking with some of their drivers. Found out that Swift is a pretty good company to go with but they said there were no job openings in my area which surprised me beause I see jobs listed around me... go figure.
Am I too old to get back into trucking?

Well Schneider finally got back to me after I sent the head honcho a letter, professional reminder of what a recruiter's job entailed.
Got my permit, my medical card, now have to wait to go with another one of Schneider's exams which includes hair drug analyst. I don't have much hair so I'm letting as much grow in as possible.
After that I go to training on the 23rd of January which is good because I'm trying to close my business and I have a lot of needy customers that desperately need my services. This time of year I am booked months out, but as of now, only a week or two out.
Things are slowing down without any signs of getting any busier. There's a reputable auto repair place across from my shop, he's only opened 3 days a week now. He's probably one of the more honest and best in the area, yet things have been slow.
I do specialty work on high end motor coaches, I'm the only certified guy around within the central Florida are, also with a very reputable reputation. I went to a rv resort last week, 5 hour round trip. The place was empty. Normally this time of year you cannot get a reservation for these places.
It's my guess that Covid has scared the crap out of everyone plus the fuel prices being so high. -
next thing I realize is that I'm running not thing but the North/East, nothing South of Maryland or West of Ohio... consistently. This seems to be their practice of new drivers. I am looking to get back into refers due to the longer runs and more states. I would love coast to coast.
I know Schneider is going to run me the Eastern states. Depending on how Shneider keeps me busy and how much money I make after being with them for awhile, depends on where I go from there. I plan on truck driving being my last career, especially at this age, I'm not a job hopper. -
Schneider will indeed keep you up in the Northeast, as well...
I speak from experience--I ran dry van for the "Big Orange" when I first started.
If you are now in south FL--DO NOT expect to go west of I-35 with them.
You'll also enjoy their 4-star accommodations at their dropyard in Kearny, NJ, too....
....but hey, it's a place to park overnite while you're there, that's free, so....something is better than nothing, right?

If you desire coast-to-coast runs, and don't mind temp-controlled, then you would probably be much better off with Swift, as has been suggested above/earlier.
I'd keep trying with them...persistence pays...

Well for right now, I'll take whomever will give me their time to get on the road to satisfy other trucking hiring requirements. I don't want to waste time playing red tape games with carriers that don't want to give the time of day.
I know what skills and talents I bring into a company and if they want to waste my time I'll go elsewhere. -
I'm also surprised you are getting set up with Schneider, I talked to a few people this past week that were told by their Schneider recruiters they are all booked up and not taking any new trainees. Cool deal for you though. Good luck! -

Roehl has a good training program

Download the Driver Pulse app. Fill out online application one time. Send it out. You will be swimming in job offers. Any company will require you to spend 3 or 4 weeks with a trainer. Get a solid year in with one company..... you will then be able to work for anybody you choose. Good luck!
VinceBlack Thanks this.
