Just hoping to get some good advice (isn't everyone). I've read some things here that make me wonder if I'm making a big mistake. I want to be an ORT for the next few years. Here's the stats: very ready to change careers, I understand full well what I'm getting into. On the downside...I'm 61 and have a poor credit score. I had a business 10 years ago that went belly up..and I just never recovered. So, I'm reading that companies will use poor credit and age to disqualify new hires. What can you tell me?

I don't think very many trucking companies use credit scores as a basis for hiring, especially as a company driver. And if they do check your credit, I doubt they put much emphasis on the result. If that was the case, 70% of the people going into the business/schools would be disqualified. Many companies have a stringent physical agility tests that excludes a lot of drivers. The age? They may try and use that against you. It seems they want inexperienced ... in trucking and an life ... so they can "mold" young drivers who don't know any different/better into clueless, obedient, little workers.

Probably not. I am your age, a little older actually, and still have many miles left in me. I honestly don't know if the large driver mill companies can risk an age discrimination lawsuit. I have seen plenty of older drivers with trainers at a number of truckstops around the country. Good help is good help no matter the age. I think in many ways age can be a plus in this industry. At least you have lived long enough to prove you haven't made any "deadly" mistakes. I think your attitude and how you carry yourself and get along with others is much more important. Your previous business was long enough ago to not affect your credit score negatively today I would think. Has it had a bad bearing on your present employment. Also, be honest with yourself about your current driving record. How good or bad is it? That makes a difference now, since CSA 2010, that it never used to make. Anyway, welcome to the site and the best of luck with your "new life". Because that is what it is. It is a "life", not just a job.

He has no CSA score!
Age shouldn't be a problem. Seen several on here around your age make a go of it. But will agree with the physical requirements some companies have might prove difficult if not in at least moderate shape. I also see several examples that I can not believe passed a basic DOT.
Some like Prime use stuff like credit(I believe it's on their web site?) but have heard it is used when they get a bad vibe during orientation. Per speculation I know but that is the rumor. England used to have some supposed super spy conducting interviews and if he did not like your looks goodbye but I heard he expired so I do not know if they still conduct similar interviews.
In short there are no guarantee's but approached with a forward attitude you should be fine.
