If you you really wanna drive just spend the money and go to cdl school. You will get a job. I was self employed for 15 yrs. My accountant told me you only have to show a profit 2 out of every 5 years. I partnered with my father and made tons of money. I only paid taxes 3 times and filed a total of 6 in 15 yrs.It was wrong not to pay taxes and it screwed my financial situation up in the long run. Long story short is I paid a private school. Got my license in 3 weeks. Found a small company that pays good. All the mega carriers turned me down because of employment history. My company simply handed me a few pages to be filled out by my previous employer. It just so happened to be my dad but there is hope and you will find a job. You find a local stone hauling company or feed hauler with 5 to 15 trucks and get your foot in the door. It worked for me
Am I wasting my time?

Of course, you could always provide a document of your own choosing to cover those years. Honestly, of course. Or just go with a small company. You have a CDL, you can work. Oh, if you were gone for those years, what's your driving record like? Big hole?

Schneider never even verified my employment history. I had 8 years with my old company (non driving job) and neither the owner or HR ever got a call. Maybe they use other ways like looking at W2's? I dont know. I went to school with a guy that was a stay at home dad for something like 7 years and he had no problem getting hired with Prime. Considering these aren't the cream of the crop companies, I don't see why it would be impossible for you to get hired. I'm sure plenty of people have situations like yours.
rachi Thanks this. -

I am not suggesting that Prime *is* cream of the crop, but from what I read on these forums, they are quite strict on their hiring requirements.
That stay at home Dad may have just had the necessary verification that satisfied Prime. Having said that, I am sure I read of another forum member who was turned down because "Prime doesn't hire unemployed people". -
Just say you were unemployed, school, taking care sick friend, etc.Last edited: Dec 20, 2015

Same sort of question.
Please post any opinion on my employment opportunities in OTR trucking.
My kidneys failed in 2012, a friend donated for me in '13. Ive been on SSDI for the past 2 years. My benefit will run out after 3 years (November '16).
Docs think I will have no problem with DOT physical and they see no reason I can't do the job. I drove 30K miles this past summer touring Canada and US.
Im 60 YO. Spent my career in Hi Tech, but have lost the skills to work in that industry. My marriage broke during the transplant, kids are grown.
Currently have a Florida DL (no points or problems for 10 years), but Im living with a friend in Idaho. Thinking about going to Sage in Caldwell. Ill have to claim residents in Idaho and get an Idaho DL to get my CDL
I need advice on - any benefits of living any place over another?
Where to start - physical, DL, drug test, school, pre hire?
Will anyone hire me at my age and disability?
Is Sage a good school?
Do most companies have decent health insurance? -

If you have never had a cdl then you only have to show proof of previous 3 years employment per dot regs. At least thats what i had to show when i started with a mega in 2006. Of course, some companies may want to see more work history then 3 years. Do what ya gotta do to show that work history.
