In terms of sheer numbers, more truck drivers --- 808 –--died on the job than any other vocation in the top ten. But because there are so many truckers, their fatality rate is only 25 per 100,000, giving them tenth place on the list. Truckers die, mostly in traffic accidents, at six times the average rate but less than a quarter the rate of timber cutters.
Like the crabbers, truckers are often under intense time pressure; the faster they move their goods around the country the more money they make. The often self-employed truckers face cut-throat competition and battle big overheads paying off expensive rigs. Exhausted truckers sometimes push themselves past their breaking point to squeeze extra dollars out of their work-week, becoming a danger to others, and, as the numbers suggest, to themselves. Right on!

BTW, heard the Hist Ch is coming out with a series on "Ice Road Truckers' (Canada's great north) in the same vein as 'World's Deadliest Catch,' which is about crab fishing the Bering Sea. Should be interesting for all truckers---make us quit our whining when driving on a little snow on the roads during winter. ha ha:biggrin_2559:

Too funny, when I was reading the 1st post the 1st thing I thought about was ice truckers. The Disc Ch has done a show on that and it's crazy. They were saying at times the can hear the craking of the ice under the rigs. No that's some at risk driving.:biggrin_2551:

Disc Channel did a show called 'Hazard Pay', and the host went to a sage school, and then went driving from Denver (looked like it) to SLC, on icy roads, overrrevving and over-braking, and generally trying to scare the poop out of Lew Grill (his instructor, star of many trucker safety films) the whole way.Good watching to say the least!

I would be more interested in the number of driver fatalities from health issues brought on by the jobs stress level and the general bad diet of OTR truckers.:biggrin_2552:

No doubt. Especially with the way 4-wheelers drive, and truck stop food is. That's a good question.
