'An Aspirin a Day' -- Just Another Cliché?

There was a time when only one brand of aspirin existed, and its manufacturer's 1920s ad campaign was intended to assure consumers that aspirin would not damage their hearts.
But we now know that aspirin can affect the heart. Today, aspirin is actually prescribed under its various generic and name brands for its heart-healthy effects.
"DOES NOT AFFECT THE HEART." That assurance in the Bayer aspirin ads of the 1920s spoke to concerns of the day that some drugs could damage the life-sustaining organ. Today it's clear that aspirin can affect the heart. Ironically, it turns out the effects are beneficial, so much so that some aspirin ads now carry the American Heart Association's seal to highlight the cardiovascular effects.
In fact, of the 80 million aspirin tablets Americans take each day, most are taken not for everyday aches and pains but to reduce the risk of heart disease, according to aspirin manufacturer Bayer Corp. (See "Aspirin's Other Uses.")
Based on studies showing aspirin's usefulness in treating cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, the Food and Drug Administration has approved its use to treat some of these serious conditions. Most recently, in 1998, FDA finalized a rule to give doctors updated information about the use of aspirin for men and women who have had a heart attack or stroke or are at high risk for them.
"Used the way it should be, the information should save a lot of lives," says Debra Bowen, M.D., deputy director of one of FDA's drug review offices. "In addition," she says, "the information should reduce adverse reactions and allow doctors to better target those who need to use the product."

I have taken an 81 mg mini aspirin daily since my doctor recommended it ten years ago. He said that he follows the same regimen. Daily use is required because about 20% of the blood is replaced daily. If I happen to puncture the skin while working on the lawn or house, I bleed like a stuck pig.

I do believe that aspirin works, however this study is almost 10 years old, in the science world things get new evidence for or against them almost daily, so in a way this paper is kinda outdated, good read tho

With all the fancy prescription pharmaceuticals available for treating heart disease, the idea that one of the best medicines is probably in your home already seems too good to be true. That it's been around since 1899 and costs a few cents a pill seems downright absurd. But it's true: Aspirin can help prevent a heart attack. It can also increase the chance of survival during a heart attack and reduce the risk of a second heart attack.

Heart attacks are caused by a condition called atherosclerosis, otherwise known as clogged arteries. Stated simply, arteries get clogged when plaque builds up on artery walls, caused by too much fat and LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Artery walls are kind of sticky, and certain fats and cholesterols are sticky too, so they build up there, forming a plaque. Plaque is crusty on the outside and mushy on the inside, and it tends to crack. When it cracks, the mushy inside attracts particles in the blood called platelets. Platelets are the blood component that makes your blood clot when you cut yourself. When platelets build up on artery walls, they can cause blood clots. My Doc never told me to start, it was my dad!
My Doc knows I take them and says it's OK!

But I don't think he's ever published a study..LOL

I have been taking them since I was 18 with no negative side effects...
Plus I rarely get a headache...LOL

You are the exact opposite of me in terms of headaches, I got a concussion last year, been suffering the after effects ever since

You really need to get in to a Doctor ASAP!

I have had a few concussions in my day and you should not be having headache's a year after the fact!
