Sorry to post another one of these, but I've read a ton on here and I'm still looking for an opinion from someone with a similar experience/situation.
A short background on me: I'm 34, college grad, now in trucking school in WA. I graduate Dec. 18th with my CDL-A and want to get to work ASAP. I was laid off in August of 2011 due to company downsizing. I worked at a Seattle TV station for almost 6 years as a Satellite truck operator, driving all over Washington and beyond. I drove Sprinters, Conversion Vans, and a 25000lb Volvo FL611 Cabover w/Air-brakes. Never had any accidents/tickets/infractions. Although it wasn't "trucking" I feel my experience is relevant since I was responsible for $500k + vehicles and their safe operation.
I had an accident on my motorcycle (laid it down under a pick-up, didnt hit anything, but they still got me for "following too close") in 7/10, then an "Improper lane change" in my car 10/10 (2010 was a really bad year for me) and am looking for a place that will take me on.
I also had a DUI in 1999, and a reckless driving in 2003 back in CT and RI, but from what I've gathered those shouldn't be to much of an issue given the age. I also have a few misdemeanors from CT/RI/MA that were in the 90's/early 2000's that were minor....Disorderly Conduct, Breach of Peace.... That being said, please save your Holier than thou rants for someone else, I know did some dumb stuff and made some bad decisions back in the day. Get over it.
So my question is this: Is there anyone out there who had similar circumstances and found a company who would hire you right out of school? If so, who?
I've already been turned down by Schneider and Gordon after filling out apps with them. Didn't even talk to anyone, just got a "No thanks" email. I'm assuming it's the 2 accidents within 3 years....which brings me to my next question:
When filling out apps, they ask about "Moving Violations" AND "Accidents". Well, in my case they are one in the same. I was in the accident and cited for it. So I'm wondering if I should be putting the info in twice.( once under violations, and once under accidents) Will they look at the 2 incidents as 4 since I'm asked about the same thing twice?
Thanks.

honestly i think reckless driving in 2003 will hurt u the most. cuz rest is over 10 years... but tickets i belive most just want 5years back:S u should be oki long as u didnt get in trouble for STEALING. if u got caught stealing it makes it alot harder for u to get a job as a driver.

Just start pumping in the applications & see if anything hits. Let the companies decide if the moving & accidents violations are one and the same. Fill out the applications honestly, but don't volunteer information that isn't asked for.
These companies are more lenient :
Carolina Cargo
Paschall Truck Lines
Western Express
Try System Transport out of Tacoma.
Google : Truck driving jobs & do some more online apps. -
Hmm.. Many good questions. Lets see if I can chim in a little and help out here. Though I have not had the experiences you had. I may be able to shed a little light.
First off, every time you jot down a accident, ticket, incident etc on an application, I believe each is looked at in a individual manner rather then as a whole. Your better off being honest, include them where they are seeking the information. Though the change I would make. Would be to include a letter explaining that, that they are one in the same. This may or not help you, but at least you gave the correct an accurate information that they are seeking so that they could not refuse your application for false information.
Anything from Nov 2002 to present year is going to be looked at on your record. The DUI should slip through the cracks due to the year it occured. The more anything you have from this time frame, eg: moving violations, felonies, etc, the harder it will be for you to get accepted within a company that you are appling.
As for companies.. Like Chinatown mentioned, Western Express may be a good place to start. Also another idea may be Warner. Like Chinatown also mentioned. Just start filling out online apps. Google and Bing search engines are your friends. The more applications you put out there, the more you increase your odds of something landing in your favor. Hope this helps. -
Thanks for the input, guys. I filled out apps with USA, May, Werner, CRE, and Western recently. Werner called yesterday but I missed the call. I plan to keep filling them out.
I've continued to be 100% accurate on the apps and put the Accidents/Tickets down in the appropriate boxes, but in the "explanation" area, the descriptions are identical, so I'm hoping they see that they are the same. The quick denial from Schneider leads me to believe that they have a program that skims apps for key words and denies those that have certain info. I applied at midnight and had my denial email at 7am..... oh well. Hopefully a recruiter at other companies actually looks at the apps before shooting me down. -
I've heard this works, but not from experience. When you do an online application, put in key words then change the key words to white. The human eye can't see the white wording but the computer scanning the application will read it. Don't know if this will help concerning traffic tickets, etc. Maybe key words,"waiver approved."
Some doing resume's do this to ensure their application goes to the next step in hiring.bumpa Thanks this. -
Sorry to ask a question on another thread but I had 3 accidents
1. Took the door off the trailer by hitting another trailer that the company owned.
2. Took the top 2 hinges off the trailer door.
3. Took the top 2 hinges off because it caught hold to a huge garbage can.
But is there any hope of me finding a job with these 3 accidents? Plus thats the reason I got terminated from my 1st job to top it off I only have 5 months of expericne.
