Both my husband and I left jobs to become team drivers. This past month we had the opportunity to be offered a run by our fleet manager back to our "home" area. We also got some extra days off. We spent that time back in the old area and both were offered our old jobs back. We both agreed.......no way! LOL

We have done very well financially, but we also like this lifestyle. Sure there are parts to the lifestyle that we don't like but ALL jobs have parts that aren't enjoyable. Even if I was paid a million dollars to be the Hershey taste tester (my life long dream job) I'd wind up as fat as a house and I wouldn't like that.

The best part of "Trucking" is the part you seem most interested in - working alone, being independent, getting the job done without having to attend stupid "focus group meetings" and nobody ever looking over your shoulder. Few things in life bring the same satisfaction (IMHO) as commanding a big rig and making it perform the way you want it to.

The worst part of trucking is - read all of the horror stories typed up across this forum. Almost any one of them is a "possibility" for you should you choose to make the leap.

I myself had to get off the road and start driving local because it was becoming too difficult for me to see my little girl grow up without me, but if you have no kids and your wife is cool with rarely seeing you, go for it!

4wheeler, I drove truck for almost a year and the experiance took me to what I do today. I sometimes hate what I currently do and don't remember feeling this way durring my trucking job. But I would not go back to trucking on my choice. Sounds to me you just need a vacation once a year or hobby. Don't worry about your job being government because someone else will just end up with it if you leave.

    Texas-Nana,

How did you do this? Did you sell your home and hit the road or do you maintain it as a "home base"? Are you doing this with the intention of making money for a time and them moving on to something else or are you in this for the long haul, no pun intended. I'd love to team with my wife but she is so attached to her "stuff" that we would have to move it all into storage, and what is the point of that? Great to hear that it is working for you. Thanks

Does your wife know you are thinking about trucking and teaming with her? Before you what to get into trucking take a vacation, rent an rv, and team drive it with your wife 20 hours a day. Only stop at truck stops or were the big trucks can park to eat and shower. And one final thing we get to play dispatcher once you put in your empty call! :biggrin_25526: Just having fun with that part. Good luck

    Baack Thanks this.

4-wheeler, you and your wife can make REALLY good money as husband/team! If she has the slightest interest don't leave her alone until she caves! My wife and I teamed for six years. We got rid of our house after the first three months and drove our butts off! Year one we made $106,000! We drove with a goal in mind. My wife wanted a horse training facility. Guess what? Six years later we have a horse training facility! The worst part about it is we both really miss driving. If you have any questions send me a pm and i'll be glad to help you. Good luck!

    Thanks chompi,

My wife is all for it. She hasn't had a lot of luck in her employment. She went a year without finding something and finally took the only thing she could get before her unemployment ran out. I don't think it's where she wants to be. So, very soon we will be a couple without a house (selling it) and no kids (drowned them). JUST KIDDING! Why not hit the road and see where it takes us.
