I’ve actually never been routed to that road,in a truck, car or otherwise. Usually if I’m sent up that far into Vermont it’s usually on I-89 or I-91.
For the most part we stick to down near Brattleboro.
The only reason I can think of for truckers trying to run that route is if Vermont DOT is pulling trucks in at inspection stations in the rest areas along I-89 at Colchester,Williston and Sharon respectively.

Yes, the gps does route people down these roads. It's not the original route, it's what happens after the driver misses a turn and the GPS reroutes.

Or the settings in the GPS aren't matching the vehicle size. One of my trainees insisted on using his Garmin truck GPS. However he had set it up, it kept routing him down class b roads. After two days, he stopped trying to use it and just followed the company provided routings.

I have a trucking GPS and it will indeed try to send you down roads you don't want to be on. I think the best way to use GPS is as a reminder, to see how many miles left until a given turn and for a visual picture of the road coming up (turns or otherwise). Determine your route during trip planning so the GPS isn't doing anything more than reminding you of what you already know.

I think another problem is some of these guys don't know when it's time to stop yapping on the phone and really pay attention when things get more involved. You can't be in Nebraska mode when you're in Vermont.

Who in their right mind would use a GPS to trip plan? That thing is just for reminders and ETA's to various points.

"If there were an easy solution..."

    There is. This sign:

    ANYONE CAUGHT OVERLENGTH
ON THIS ROAD GOES TO PRISON.
    NO EXCUSES.

    Then enforce it.
