And PACCAR still has issues regardless if it’s the brakes or engines.
2/3rds of our fleet is PACCAR trucks (Peterbilt 579 Epiq and KW T-680 sleeper models). All of them have Cummins X15 engines.
Between the electronics and transmission issues they’re turning into shop queens!
Especially with the instrument panels freezing up in which FMCSA actually forced PACCAR to recall them!
Meanwhile the Freightliners are still going strong!
And incidentally, the only truck model that has NEVER broke down on me was a Volvo!!![]()

Me in my Paccar loaded heavy with bottled water just chilling with the cruise set at 67.. I know subzero temperatures are tough on steel and everything else so easy I went down the road. Meanwhile everyone else flying by like usual. One flew by only to jump in front and to the shoulder he went..
Maybe they all just had their fuel gel up, it sure was downright fluffin cold..but even so I haven’t put one drop of anti gel in my tanks this winter. Heck, I just spent the weekend in ND thinking I finally got to hell and it froze over..
I called out to everyone on the CB sitting in their plastic trucks asking if they were okay (I would stop if they were freezing to death) not one reply..
Come to think of it, it’s kind of a rare sight seeing a Paccar product on the shoulder with its hood up any time of year.
Heck I got 750k miles logged between 3 Paccar trucks I personally owned and not one have I needed a tow..maybe tomorrow though..
My 2023 now has 305k on the meter and only had one real issue. Was a lesson learned because I should have had the DPF cleaned at 200k since I idle a lot. Other than that I got a couple notices for software updates. Got one back in November but since my Paccar rarely gives me issues the notice sits in my briefcase.
Seriously, I don’t know what to think because when I drove a Volvo it was on the hook twice with under 100k miles. All I know is I do a lot of giggling when I pass by the plastic trucks on the shoulders.

Over the past 4 years I’ve driven KWs they’ve had the the following issues:
2021 KW T-680
Transmission failure(dropped out of gear)
Transmission glitches (transmission hesitation to shift into gear-gear indicator would flash “3” for 5 seconds to the point where the brakes would release and the truck could roll back before going into gear)
2023 KW T-680 Next Gen
Kingpin locking jaws would not disengage to release kingpin (air hose popped off)
Fifth wheel dropped trailer due to adjustment bolt on fifth wheel popping out
Instrument panel frozen-gauges would not work (FMCSA forced PACCAR recall)
No running taillights
Transmission dropped out of gear
Instrument panel lit up like a Christmas tree!
Emergency shutdown(check engine and shut off engine light)-truck towed to dealer
Differential sensor replaced and DPF filter clogged-was replaced!Last edited: Feb 19, 2025

The very thing I have against guys running Paccar products is the attitude they have against all other truckers. I’ve seen it time and time again. It doesn’t matter if the Volvo driver has a million safe miles under his belt he’s in a plastic truck and the 21 year old in his Levi jeans and cowboy boots with his low air bostron seat is ranked far above him just because of what he drives. I used to actually want a Peterbilt, but a few years back I realized I didn’t want the attitude that goes along with it.
prostartom, broke down plumber and mjd4277 Thank this. -
Company trucks go to company shops for their oil changes and light service work and only go to a dealer when there are problems. Versus a guy like me who goes to Peterbilt for my service work. And when I’m getting an oil change I say “hey are there any software updates my truck needs?” and they say “let me check”. And when there are updates available I get them done. I can also decide how I want my transmission set up.
Some of the complaints up above about a transmission “not letting you” select a gear is 100% programming and not the actual transmission. And the dash freezing was due to running the truck after software updates were available. My dash got updated long before a notice showed up in the mail about it and I never had any issues with it freezing up.
It’s wild how people can have such different experiences with basically the same components on a truck.prostartom, Oxbow and Goodysnap Thank this.
