Sitting in the parking lot of the Pilot in Bradford, CT. A well dressed, clean cut man with a back pack walks up and tells me that on his way out the door of his home he spilled wine on his pants and had to change them and then left in a hurry so as not to miss his bus. After riding the bus for 15 minutes, he says his daughter called and told him that he'd left his wallet in the pants he left at home. He told me that he needed $16.55 to cover the cost of the bus ticket back home to get his wallet.

Me: "I'll be happy to help you out if you're truly in need. Do you have a phone?"

    Him: <confused look> "um yeah" <pulls phone from pocket>

Me: "Call your daughter and hand me your phone so I can verify your story with her."

Him: "Oh, it's a prepaid phone and I'm almost out of minutes"

Me: "Well, I can use my phone then. Give me her number and I'll call her to verify your story"

Him: "Never mind" <walks away quickly towards the Pilot building>

Folks, whenever someone comes to you with a sob story and asking for money, please please please verify that they have a legitimate need before handing over your cash. Anyone that's truly in need will have no problem with you doing your due diligence.

Had a business casual guy ask me for money to buy some fixaflat for his car just the other day at the fuel island. I happened to have a can in my walmart roadside emergency kit, & went to retrieve it from under my bunk. "nevermind" he says and walks to the next truck...

Whenever I get the, "I need money for gas" story. I always tell them I wil put $5 or $10 these days in their tank, I won't hand over the cash. Only once did someone take me up on it. I kept my word and put the gas in their car.

windsmith, MJ1657 and teddy_bear6506 Thank this.

last time it was a couple that was claiming their car ran out of gas on the off-ramp on the other side of the interstate....

"Sorry to hear that. I just got off on that off-ramp and there was no car there. So either you are not telling me the full story or your car has already been towed."

He just turned around and walked away.

The best one I saw was a guy in Vegas. Had a sign that read "Why Lie, I Need Money For Beer"

I handed $20 to a guy standing on the corner of an intersection the other day.

Of course he was a firefighter with his whole crew out there doing the fill the boot campaign, so as a former firefighter myself I felt the need to gladly hand him my hard earned cash.

We use to have a guy in my home town who would stand out side asking for money. I always felt bad for him but never really had money to give him. Than one day I saw him walking down the road and turned around to go pick him up and give him some money and a hot meal. as I got close to him he walked behind walmart and opens the door to a vete and starts to change his clothes. I sat and watched and after he got changed I pull up by him and say hi when he put the key in and started it up and told me have a good day....go figure...
