If any of you have ready any of my previous posts, I have a Galaxy 44 with a palomar 225. My antenna is actually a top loaded four foot kenworth. I thought it was a firestik but was wrong...

my setup works great, just got done talking skip to west virginia going down a back road about an hour ago, so no complaints, but was interested in possibly changing my antenna. The only problem is, I was considering getting one of the wilson antennas but my truck is a chevrolet colorado and i also have a bedcover, no toolbox. so, it wouldn't work very well would it? because aren't they bottom loaded? and wouldn't it have to start on the top of my roof in order to work properly?

right now, my antenna is bolted into part of my truck bed behind my cab and i would like to keep it that way instead of putting some kind of clunky magnet mount on the roof of my cab.

    any suggestions?

A wilson would work fine as long as the center coil is above the roof line of the truck. It would work below also just not near as efficiently. They make a long shaft version of the wilson for such applications. just google wilson antennas

I will google wilson but do you know the actual name of the antenna to look for? also, are there any other ones beside wilson? like astatic? or something like that?

I heard the new wilson antenna were S h it. especially the ones you can buy with the coil up higher.

They are not as good as the older ones but they are still good antennas. The long shaft model has a sw before the numbers. Google Wilson SW2000 trucker antenna, the sw stands for short whip. You can also find decent deals on these on ebay.

Wilson 5 or 7 ft silver load antenna. They are a top loaded antenna and would work great on your truck. You could also get a Skipshooter antenna, pretty much the same thing and works just as well for almost half the price.

Not trying to be aknow it all (i dont) but this is something you may not know.

The only thing about doing something like this is that it will make you derectional. Meaning you will talk better from side to side or front to back, just depends on where you have the antenna. When ever you put an antenna on one side or the other of a car or truck it makes your radition pattern follow that side of the truck so you may notice a change in the way you receive someone while your driving down the road,if they are more than a few miles from you anyway. If you can or have the antenna on the bed and center it behind the cab then your better off but you will still be derectional, front to back.

It's no big deal as you will not see a huge change in the signal stength of the person you are talking to around town, but. if you turn in a derection that the antenna does not transmit well from and you are far from them they could lose you all together!

My friend has a Chevy truck,he had mounted an antenna on the drivers side of the truck and we did a little test while he was around 15 miles from me. With the truck pointed in my derection he would put 8 S units on me. Pointing away from me and i could just hear him. Now understand that i was on my base with a Imax 2000 about 75 fet in the air. Those that were in there cars in town could not hear him at all unless he was pointing in our derection. He then put a Wilson mag mount dead center of the roof and he put the same signal on me no matter if he were pointing at me or away and the locals heard him just fine. A mag mount antenna trans and receive is pretty much the same in any derection because it is mounted dead center of the roof and the pattern of the antenna is more uniform.

Which is why i say that mag mounts are the way to go unless you want something derectional.

I uploaded some pictures of my setup so you guys know what I am talking about. I have a 4 foot Kenworth antenna that works fine but I was interested in maybe going up a foot or something with a whip or whatever.

The radio is a Galaxy 44 and the Palomar 225 is behind my seat.

Maybe this will help with ideas of what kind of upgrade I could do with the antenna.

Thats the best place to have the mount unless you roof mount it in the middle of the roof. Any of previously mentioned antennas would work fine their as long as the center coils are above the roofline. The higher the better.

I talked to a guy earlier on the phone about using a Hustler HQ-27. It is a stainless steel antenna that is top loaded with an adjustable part on the top for tuning. The CB tech I go to said that it should work good. Any thoughts?
