If I recall correctly (its been awhile since I dealt with RF) the power received by an antenna varies as the cosine of the incident angle. Basically it means you get maximum power when the things are vertical, and it decreases slowly at first (and a whole bunch more the closer you get to horizontal) as that angle from the vertical increases. So its mostly an ego thing.

The fan is used to force air through the APU airconditioner heat exchanger.

By putting the antennas flat, you change the output from vertical to horizontal, so if you have the forward antennas and are trying to hear somebody with them vertical it is a 12db loss!

I actually lean my antenna slightly forward to keep them from whacking tree limbs, etc and turning the tips into question marks. My antenna mount is a welded rod off the top rail of my car hauler's head rack & I have a car or SUV sitting out over my hood. I need to get above this car with the antenna if I can so I went with a long tip and angled it forward to keep it about 13' 6". That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

(I have been known to stick my hankie in any pocket when I'm in a hurry...I'm gonna have to watch that)

Mine is pointed somewhat forward to keep from breaking another one off on a tree limb, we go to some pretty bad places....

The Fans are for the APU Unit and the Antennas pointing forward, yes is like attitude, mostly the West Coast Rigs like this. It actually kills some of the reception depending on how far the antenna's are leaning.

Oh stop it everybody. They lean the antennas forward because it makes the truck look tough like a fighting bull.

    It started in Texas. :biggrin_255:

I didn't realize it bothered so many people having them pointed forward guess I'll add another antenna on the passenger side and point them both farther forward..

GroundPounder...I have found ANYTHING can bother an overly opinionated truckdriver from how much air your put in your seat to your antenna positioning to the number of chicken lights on your ride...and they will go ahead and assign your eternal resting place (heaven or hell) based on their idea of how you should have done it. None of the 3 items mentioned have any effect on their business, comfort or life values but they will not hesitate to lambast you for anything they can roll off their tongue (or type with their 2 digits). I tend to run with no air in my seat (I heard it voids your warranty if you put air in a Pete seat), point my antennas forward (to keep from whacking the tree limbs & squirrels off power lines) and currently have about 300 chicken lights...all of them working.

I always thought if Mr DOT sees an xtra long antenna he might want to check to see if you are over the height limits, thats (IMO) why the antennas are pointed forward.
