I think anyone who has driven a 13 will much favor that over a typical 9 or 10 speed.

a 9 spd is a 13 without the gear splitter OD.
The 9 spd is the most fuel efficient tranny made for the manuals.
Splitting gets you better control for the hills.
For a road truck and most other conditions, the 13 is fine. If you get into heavy haul, consider the 18 for splitting the bottom side too. -
13 gives you the ability to get 1/2 a gear at atime better for fuel mileage better for pulling all around a great tranny ..no need to split all of the time I still skip alot of gears when empty but when loaded esp in hilly areas its the cats meow..

My favorite transmission.:smt049

9spd isn't necessarily most fuel efficient. Technically a direct drive is more efficient. Fuel economy depends on much more than transmission! 13 spd is nice because you can split top gears for hills or drive it like a 9 spd. Transmission needs to be matched to the right rear end for max fuel efficiency.

I drive an 18 speed here in western PA and I wouldn't have it any other way, to be able to split each gear really helps me when I'm loaded starting off on inclines. Being able to split each individual gear makes the gear change much quicker, and really no lag like you would have in 8-9-or 10 speeds while pulling a grade. I'm originally from Florida and I see no need for it down there, a standard 10 was always fine for me, so I guess you could say the preference really will fall within where you operate.

Yep. A 9 speed is only more fuel efficient if you govern the truck down to not need overdrive. Knight did all the research on that years ago (when fuel was $1 a gallon). I personally would rather sacrifice 0.3 MPG to go 8 MPH faster (with 3.55 rear gear & 24.5 LP tires). Even at only $1.11 per mile line haul rate you are at break even, at $2 per mile you are earning way more money. $16 per hour more pay while spending $9 per hour more for fuel = $7 per hour more revenue with a 13 Vs. a 9 speed.

Rather have a 13 simply for the hills. You have more options and can drop Or grab a half gear at a time instead of a full saving speed.

Eaton 13 speed is a nice transmission.
I was assigned a new Volvo in January with an iShift 12 speed automatic and don't care if I ever go back to manual shifting though.chopper103in Thanks this.
