Yep but most starter companies are reefers but there are other options as well. It seemed like a good example. One bonus to reefer is ya have a way to jump dead batteries when your apu cuts out while you sleep.

I did reefer most of my career and made good money, but the delivery hours are killer, mostly deliver between midnight and 0500.
I've also done tanker and flatbed after the reefer driving; much easier work, more money and usuallly delivery during daylight hours. Much easier physically & mentally.

I recommend you get your career started with tanker or flatbed.

Chinatown provided most excellent advice regarding how to start your career. Never had any desire to drive reefer or dry van and the only van I ever touched was in school.

I did plenty of research, found the companies I wanted to work for, contacted each and asked exactly what I needed to do in order to become employed with them and followed it to a "T." Straight out of school I landed on the sweet spot. You can do it, too.

What other job that newcomer like me can expect?
I always thought that reefer driver work hrs that demand then to be on time due to the nature of their cargo.

Like Chinatown says, check out a tanker or flatbed company that hires new drivers. There's plenty of threads on this forum listing some of those companies. If you can't find them let one of us know and we'll get you pointed in the right direction.

Any load that has an appointment time requires you to be on time.

On time appointments are but one score that rates a carrier. Rates that are reviewed by shippers/receivers when choosing a carrier with which to trust their business.
