Not sure if anyone else has ever been in a similar situation, but a company I applied with is in the final stages of my background check which is verifying employment and have requested me to send in a copy of my 2008 W2 which I cannot find. I worked for the Allstate Motor Club and they outsourced a few years back so my carrier is having trouble verifying them. I filed my taxes online at H&R block and when I log on it says that the record no longer exsist. I looked online for help on where to get them but i'm getting incorrect info and some places say it could take 45 days. Does anyone know if there is another way to maintain a copy of them or where I can obtain them in a quicker fashion as i'm due to start training in 15 days. Thanks alot for any and all help.

Did you keep copies of your tax stuff? You're supposed to keep it around for seven years in case you get audited. If your stuff was scanned in when you submitted your e-file, maybe H&R Block has a copy stashed on a disc somewhere?

Otherwise, try the Social Security Administration. You might not get a W-2, but they used to be able to print out a work history...for a fee, of course. I don't remember what the fee is, but the information on the paper they give you usually has months/years you were at a job and earnings you had.

It's the best I can come up with. Good luck...

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has a three year statute of limitations on auditing a return. Keep all records of income or deduction expense for three years. However, if you use the income averaging option, you may need to prove your taxable income for four base years and if you failed to report more than 25 percent of your gross income, the government will have six years to collect the tax or start legal proceedings.

the o/p can also try the unemployment office as they too have records on you.

for me personally, i keep my tax records for 10 years.

1st off, really appreciate your replies and recommendations. All of you are exactly right in saying that I should have printed and saved copies of my W2's. I was still young and dumb and didn't think it would ever be an issue since it wasn't before, but you live and you learn. Never again! I'm going to call 2morrow and see if they will except a "statement" which can be faxed from the IRS for free, otherwise I may have to pay and I will also look into the unemployment office. Thanks again for all of the help and advice.

IIRC when I was trying to verify employment for Schneider several years back I went to the local IRS office and they were able to do a printout of my my income amounts and sources for a couple of years back. It wasn't an "official record" but it was something. Unless H&R Block can print it for you (might try an office) the only way to get an official copy is through the Social Security Administration which is expensive and slow.

Yes, I've had to send returns from all my years of self-employment(including schedule Cs) to all the companies I want to get a pre-hire with...

I even filled out the verification of employment form for them! :biggrin_25523:

Good advice from Injun concerning contacting the Social Security Administration.

You are also entitled to a yearly statement from Social Security for free. This lists all your income reported to them since you began filing tax returns.

The statement is generally mailed out within 3 months of your birthday.

It won't show what you made at a particular enployer, but it will show your total taxable income for the year.

If you are not getting the statement, you can request one here
