So first a little background.. back in Sept. 2009 I decided it was time to look into becoming a truck driver, I had always felt a desire to get into it, but family and stuff kept me from exploring it.. but, in 2009 it was a good time for me to. I first looked into the training companies, like CR England, Central and the like and had concerns, so I checked out a private truck driving school and applied to them.. was worried because my MVR was not horrible, no dui's or tickets over 10 mph.. but did have a suspension for a failure to comply for a no license on person.. the school ran my MVR and accepted me and said it was not a problem. So, to save money on interest and get a full payment discount I handed over $5000 cash and started in two weeks.I completed the school top of my class and had my CDL A with all the endorsements. I started to apply with companies only to have my MVR prevent me from being hired. Then, my brother called with good news, he had a friend who rove flatbed and was willing to train me and get me some miles in the seat and get me on with bis company..I was so excited, I talked to him by phone and email, and be even had me fax him my MVR nd transcripts from my school. Then he called and said he got it okay'd with his company and he would be in Des Moines Iowa in a 3 days and I was to meet him there to begin my training. So I packed and hit the road to begin traing for my new career.Well, it started off okay, but each day got weirder and worse and by the time we reached California I had learned that be never arranged anything with bis company, and in fact they didn't even know I was with him. I figured I would fend him off and try to stick it out till we got back in the Midwest.. well, it got worse and all we were doing was staying out in California run up and down the coast... I finally had enough and bought a cheap used car and came.back home.. when I got home I needed to vet to work asap as to try and recoil my loses.. so I took a job at a jiffy lube to have a pay check.. then, had to go into the hospital for kidney stones and the Dr. Wouldn't go e me a release to go back to work and Jiffy wouldn't let me return without one so I got a job as a cab driver and they waived the physical since I had a Current Medical Card.. Then my dad had a stroke and I moved in to take care of him and got a job bartending.. Well, now things are good on the homefront and I want to be a truck driver... But have 0 verifiable experience and it has been years xnce I went to truck driving school...I do not want to have to pay $5000 again... I have my CDL A and a Current medical card... Any Suggestions on where to go to get going..

Start calling recruiters, many co's do refreshers. You should find work if you keep putting irons in the fire

If you're in the hiring area, Maverick and Paschall Truck Lines will hire you.
Schneider might hire you for tanker and give you refresher.
You may read bad reviews about CRST, but they will hire and retrain you for an 8 month obligation, then you can leave.
Swift will hire you and send you through refresher, then you have a choice to stay or leave. If you leave they will bill you for the training.
Maybe some other drivers will post some more options.

Best advice is call recruiters and be honest. The reason you want to be honest is that you don't want to get to orientation and waste your time just to get sent home for a problem on your record. I work at USA Truck, but have worked at Swift and Werner. All of them will tell you up front if they will accept you. Just call and talk to the recruiter... Look on here for trucking jobs, go to websites and check out requirements, then if you meet their new hire requirements, call a recruiter and talk with them.

Roehl and Melton would be my top suggestions. Both are strong companies with good training/refresher programs.

I am not a "truck driver" . I Own some class 8 vehicles & use them on occasion for my own amusement. Monetary gain is sometimes associated with it. I was a "truck driver" at one time.

Um aside from cigarettes being cheaper and property taxes being higher there's no difference between Nebraska and Iowa really. Desmoins is probably a better hiring area as a matter of fact. I have noticed a lot of companies. Especially Maveric as mentioned above by china town aren't hiring in Nebraska. Or at least they weren't a couple years ago things may have changed since then I am not 100% sure. Although maveric would be a great company for the OP to start with if he can get on.

The main thing is honesty. Be honest with the recruiters explain your situation if they're willing to hire you believe that and throw everything else they have to say out the window as 10-1 its a lie who would've thought? As for saddle tramps idea about taking the wife. Eh sometimes its nice others you just want the bed to yourself. Don't get me wrong I can fit across my seats to go to sleep but its a lot more comfortable sleeping in my bed lol.

Thank you all for the great responses.. I will talk to recruiters and go from there.. I am feeling more optimistic... As I am fortunate. that my MVR and background are clean, all I am.lacking is any real experience... But am putting together a list of company's where I can get on and who have a refresher course and training... Which will be best in the long run as I wouldn't want to be put in a truck and make a mistake that would ruin it for me...
Thanks again... I will keep you posted and so the ideas of company's coming..
