Friends,
To begin, Im not even a truck driver but am seriously considering giving it a try. I currently work for the Department of Correction but will not mention the state for reasons that will be obviously clear shortly. A few weeks ago I was assaulted by an offender with feces and urine; this is the firth time my being assaulted in this manner and I have had it. To make matters worse I am under investigation. The icing on the cake was the first responders froze the ones that were to come to my assistance. Soooo I am desiring to make a career change and have longed to drive a truck for years. I do not have a CDL nor have I ever driven a truck. The closest thing I have to driving a truck is a school bus I own (its a camper) but I have looked into the trucking schools in this area and into trucking companies.
Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. CR England has a school just down the road from me; would love your thoughts on them.
Anyhow thank you for taking the time to read this and for any advice that is offered.

There are some Threads under Motor Carriers - In side scoop for CR England. I have read both good and bad things about them look there as well as under favorite trucking companies. There is alot of good information in all those threads to make the decision that is right for you. You just have to look for it.

My $0.02
Go to a school on your own. Find a way to do it so you owe no one anything.
Then find a company that you like (Besides C.R. England) and pursue working there.
Most people here say to stay away from the big companies but I do not agree. Some are bad (CR England) and some are really good. But, don't worry about where you will work until you have your CDL with ALL of the endorsements on it. Even get your TWIC. You may never need it, but it's just one more thing that sells you.
Personally I went to a private school, paid $1,500 for it. I ended up in the same Orientation Training as drivers who paid anywhere from $6500 all the way up to $8200. I'm paid for, they have payments to make. We drive for the same company. Do the math.
I am a Rookie Driver. I admit that. I learn new things all the time. I also have a gig pulling a Large Retail Store Trailer and I am never farther than 400 miles from home. It's a nice gig. Vampire hours, I hit the Truck stop after most drivers have left and I am paid well.
Did I start out thinking , "Hey, I want this job" ? Nope. I played it out and let the cards fall where they did.
Get your license. Get your endorsements. Get your TWIC. Apply everywhere but CR England and you will do just fine.Last edited: Sep 18, 2010

Currenty at school at Crowder College in Neosho, MO. I personally think it is a great school. Very patient instructors and they know there stuff. It costs $3125.00 (5 week program) plus $595 to stay in the dorms and that includes 3 meals a day and 2 on the weekends. They also have plenty of recruiters visiting during your training. I thought I had my mind made up on who I was going to go with before I started school and that has changed. Do your homework. I picked Crowder because I didn't hear a bad thing about it. DOC officers are often hit with urine. There is a lot of politics in corrections and police depts. It sounds as if your back up was held on purpose. Is there something there that needs addressing? Some depts have a in house way of punishing someone. My thoughts on CRE. Getting hit with urine can't be that bad......

i will never know your pain and agony from your job, i can only say that trucking isn't all peaches and cream either.
my feelings are, "why is it that everyone things trucking is going to save them from unemployment, bad jobs, bad marriages, bills, hardships, etc,etc"........??
trucking should NEVER be thought of as an "escape" from things in life one runs away from.
i got to be honest (and sincere) when i say that at least YOU DID NOT SAY............"i always liked driving, (or) i always wanted to be a truck driver, (or) its something i always wanted to do"...........
that make ME feel good, knowing you DO WANT a change.........not just another.........."wannabe"............that's looking for escapism..........(no pun in light of you being a C.O.)
i say GO FOR IT FULL THROTTLE...........!!!!!!!
CR England IS NOT the best choice, but given thier location to you......why not.....??
get your training, do your time (albeit no bars...!!) and MOVE ON BRO.........
hey, you might be the very first guy i actually said GO.......to.......!!!!!!!
usually, i try to dissuade people from being drivers....... -
You're around feces and urine in the trucking industry too. They throw it but not at you!

LOL...that was probably the kindest yet most truthful way to put it, Condo.
