Unfortunately, the apu trucks are just about history. I had one, best product ever, but I don't pay the bills.
Inventors will easily power most 110 appliances, small microwave, tv, dvd, ,etc.
Mine will stay on all night under light load.
Now, if its winter and I have any hope of bunk heater staying on and not freezing to death. Best not run anything without idling to keep batteries charged.
This usually isn't a issue, except between 70 & 30 something degrees truck won't idle over 5 minutes. Apu truck, didn't have those worries.
If you have a pet. Which I had in apu truck,
But can't have truck idling all summer. So no dog. Not giving away that penny.
If you don't idle constantly, keep your Mpg's up, out of route low, won't have any problems.
Satellite Radio is XM, so no Nascar channel.
But get O&A. And Ron & Fez

Hopefully, you're seeing this. I am in the same situation and retirement has never been a problem for me. "Retired" and "unemployed" are not the same thing at all, especially if you have 20 years or more with one employer, as I did. Of course, the devil is in the details but the trucking industry is in big need of drivers, so give it a shot.

    Good luck to you.

That's too bad. APU's are the best device going. My first company (based in Wisconsin, so they know cold) had them, but my current regional doesn't. I'm a bit of an environmental freak and idling makes no sense there.5-6 gph versus 1 gph just seems wasteful. And since we don't buy fuel anywhere (we fill up at our yard only) using fuel to stay cool on days like this increases the chance of running out of diesel, especially if we're a long way from home, as I am today.

Having an APU has become a requirement for me.

Did I hear right or was I dreaming? I thought I heard a recent advertisement for Con-Way Truckload saying they would forgive your tuition after just one load with them. Something along the lines of that's how confident Con-Way was that their new drivers would want to stick with them for the - literally - "long haul." If so, that ought to be a great recruiting tool, as it means getting your CDL with them is virtually free.

Too good to be true, or....?

Hello all! I have been intrigued and reading this thread for the past couple days. I have been away from OTR trucking since my first year, but am no starting to look for a change and to move back to a bigger company. I have read through the first 25+ pages and skipped some to get to the last couple pages, so sorry if I missed anything since 2011 that has changed. I am wanting to go back OTR for a year or so and make a change. I would love to drive for a company that has a Passenger Program and a pet policy, which I have seen Con-Way does (except for the .01 cpm "fee" for having a pet). I am thinking about Con-Way as my highest possiblity, but haven't been with a "major" company since I started in '07. I still have my CDL class A with Hazmat and drive for my current company in a Tri State region and haven't had any accidents. Does anyone know if my experience at a "smaller" company will hinder getting hired at Con-Way? Thanks so much for all the information so far, Con-Way seems like a great place to work.

If I remember correctly, if you crossed state lines and were expected to sleep in the sleeper Conway will consider that "OTR" experience even if was regional work (talk to a recruiter to confirm). Being a smaller company won't matter as long as they can reach someone to verify your time there. Have you had any tickets?

You can also get that 1cpm pet fee back if you meet the mpg goal each the quarter (6.5mpg I think -- easy to hit as long as you don't go crazy idling).

I haven't been here a full year yet, but with that said, I can't think of a better otr dry van "mega" carrier than Con-way -- at least for me. I'd only consider leaving to go to a private carrier (like Walmart) or to become an owner operator...

Thanks for the info Double Yellow! I do a once a month run that I am out for 3 days regularly, each month. And I am in between IN, KY, TN, OH and a little bit of IL *all* the time. Every once in awhile, I will have an over-nighter, when we have a huge load going out. I'll have to get in touch with a recruiter and see what I can find out. Thanks again!

I ran the same area for 8 years you are in Louisville Jeff Indy cincy Chicago doing furniture & appliances.
Wasn't class a just a medium duty penske so they didn't recognize the miles when it came to starting pay just as work history. Prob do the same to you.

As much as I whine I agree with yellow as this place being the best overall dry van only mega out there. But then again look @ who is the competition ::roll eyes @ all of you::

Yes, paid back after one load. No, not all tuition is paid. I think Crowder cost me $1500 about 3 years ago. Six of it was room and board as I was from out of state, and I think I paid a grand of the tuition.

Yes, the pitch sold me. Yes still here and still happy.

On the pet pass. There is a non refundable $300 deposit. The 1 cent a mile is deducted, but as long as you maintain average Mpg's, which I think is 6.5. You get that 1 cent a mile back at months end paycheck.
Now summer time, leaving truck run to keep pet cool and retain your 1 cent might be s challenge. 3 other seasons shouldn't be a issue.
