Hi all. New to this forum, after a couple hours of Googling for information. My husband and I are considering trying to get started in a new career as OTR team drivers, neither of us have done this although we have pulled large horse trailer all over the midwest for many years.

Both of us have pretty clean driving record....no DUI's ever, no speeding tickets last 7 years or so, (maybe 1-2 each in our lifetimes), but he had a drug conviction (felony, manufacturing Meth) in 2002...... as well as no great record for holding the same job for over 3, 4 years.

    So a couple questions:
Does his past automatically exclude any possibility of us ditching our current jobs for a OTR husband/wife team career?

Would the fact that we are not kids (I'm 41, he's 39) be in our favor with trying to find someone willing to take a chance on us?

If we're wanting to (and only willing to) drive as a team, do they factor in my rather good stats with his? (I've been with same employer for 18 years, exc credit rating, no criminal history ever, good driving record).

Any input / ideas/ advice before we set out to contact some companies would be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

I donno, Felonies and Drug Charges are a Big Deal in Trucking. And it only being 8 years ago isn't gonna make it any easier. Most Companies want AT LEAST 10 years no DWI/DUI or Felonies.

If I where you I would start calling Companies that hire new drivers and tell them your situation and see if you can find a few that will hire you Before you spend any money on school.

I would pull his record and see how they word it. And then figure out a good way to word what his felony was for.

    Thanks, AT & Jolsen.

Any companies you would recommend starting with?

Also, what if we just jumped in with both feet and bought a truck? Or is that something you'd highly recommend against a couple of complete newbies attempting?

Newbies should not go O/O right away. You need a year minimum to get a feel for the biz and how things work on the road. Also, no insurance company worth a dang is going to insure a complete rookie.

    Thanks, Lilbit.

Hadn't thought of insurance, although I did have some serious misgivings on whether any bank in their right mind would loan truck buying money to complete newbies, lol.

One more question, and I'll leave you guys alone about this for tonight.....

In regards to contacting companies to see if they would at least consider giving us the chance, would emailing them be appropriate? I do have the ability to write fairly professionallly, so I think I would be able to convey both what I feel we have to offer a company that would give us a chance, as well as an honest disclosure of his past, in a concise manner that shouldn't make the readers eyes glaze over.

But, if initial contact via email if frowned upon in this industry, I can certainly make phone calls or simply mail hard copy resumes.

Would appreciate input on what you all think would yield the best results.

    Thanks again, so much :)

Email is usually a good place to start, but at some point you'll end up on the phone with them to get the information you really want. Check out some of the websites of the companies you are interested in. They usually have a section of driver requirements or qualifications.

Thanks, I'll check that out on their websites. At least we don't have to worry about minimum age restrictions :)

I have a strong dislike for these typical posts where convicted felons with drug charges want into this sport. It's sad to see so many come into this industry as their last resort ............

I'd just call a recruiter. I can't think of any at the moment that would be good for teams in that area that might hire with a criminal record but, I'll check around a bit and I'll post anything I find.
