Any company drivers legally getting over 3,000 since the new HOS change?

    this might be a rookie question but im alittle confused as ive never drove over the road been all local i do my 70 hr on day 5 or six then i have to reset to get a fresh 70 what i dont quit understand is a the 8 day recap thing and you saying that you dont have to reset never heard that one thanks in advance

    You're allowed under the new HOS a maximum 70 hours driving and on-duty hours per week (any running 7 consecutive days, not a 'calendar' week). To keep track of this you keep a running record or recap.

    (Otherwise, a reset 'resets' your running hours to zero. Resets are optional. Take it if you get back on the road faster or you have sufficient time off, for example, at home. After a reset you start a new 1-7 consecutive days with your first day back becoming Day 7, tomorrow it becomes Day 6, day after tomorrow it becomes Day 5, etc.)

    That is, I always figure today is Day 7 of 1-7 consecutive days. Every day, a day 'falls off' your maximum of 70 hours and at least those hours are available today. So, if Day 1 of your just past 'current consecutive 7' you ran 8 hours and had 2 on-duty, that day will 'fall off' on Day 8 (today, for example) and you'll have at least that 10 hours available on Day 8--which is now Day 7.

    Day 8 becomes Day 7 of your current consecutive 1-7 days and Day 2, becomes Day 1 and will 'fall off' tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes Day 7 of a new current consecutive 7 days. A rolling recap.

    Clear as mud? It becomes easier. It's just wordy to explain. Today is Thursday, August 15. My last 'consecutive 7' is:

    August 07 (Wednesday) fell off...
    Day 1 = Aug 08 (Thursday) (10 driving/on-duty--hypothetically)
    Day 2 = Aug 09 (Friday) (0 driving/on-duty)
    Day 3 = Aug 10 (Saturday) (0 driving/on-duty)
    Day 4 = Aug 11 (Sunday) (0 driving/on-duty)
    Day 5 = Aug 12 (Monday) (0 driving/on-duty)
    Day 6 = Aug 13 (Tuesday) (0 driving/on-duty)
    Day 7 = Aug 14 (Wednesday) (6 hrs driving/1 hr on-duty)

    Aug 08 'falls off' today (Aug 15) and my new current consecutive 7 is:

    Aug 08 (Thursday) falls off...
    Day 1 = Aug 09......... 0
    Day 2 = Aug 10......... 0
    Day 3 = Aug 11......... 0
    Day 4 = Aug 12.......... 0
    Day 5 = Aug 13.......... 0
    Day 6 = Aug 14.......... 7
    Day 7 = Aug 15 (today)

    You can have a maximum of 70 driving/on-duty hrs in those 7 consecutive days. What you can drive today (Aug 15) is 70 hrs less (minus) your accumulated hours Day 1- Day 6. Because you know you had 10 hours on Thursday Aug 08, it 'falls off' today and you have at least that available today...

    But always a maximum of 70 driving/on-duty hrs each rolling 7 days. (Rolling because it rolls into a new list of 7 consecutive days each day... )

    Is the fog lifting? As soon as it lifts here (I-70 rest area 300 miles east of Indy) I'll be under way (to Philly). Well, not before my 10 is up at 5:15 am. I've taken some time off so for me, yesterday was Day 6 of a new rolling recap that had 0 hrs used Days 1-5. I have 63 available of 70.

    Today becomes Day 7, yesterday becomes Day 6 and 0 hrs used Days 1-5. My log shows 6 driving and 1 on-duty yesterday. It will 'fall off' a week from now and then I'll have at least that 7 hours available.

    Since I work part-time, I never have to worry about it. Time to scoot.

    From Bell Vernon, PA for a tandem tire repair: Someone may have a better explanation, or might count the other way Day 7 the oldest, Day 1 most recent. Either way, every day one day falls off and you have those hours available whatever it was and you can keep going for those hours unless you've used your 70 and you would then have to stop driving until you have more hours (due to another day falling off, for example) or take a reset and start over with 70 hours available.

    oh come on 3000 miles is a piece of cake I average about 4300 a week going from st louis to the west coast and back every week. I will use every single bit of my 70 to do it and some times i will have to use 1 day of a recap.

    How about some details--miles/day--driving hrs/day--on duty hrs/day??

    Most drivers don't have those miles... nice if you've gottum!! (Me: Indy to Philly the long way. 309 yesterday, 509 today. Driving hrs yesterday 6/1 on duty--today 9.75 driving/on duty 1. 3-ring, paper logs. Did not have to etch-a-sketch but very close. It's a placarded load and can't go through tunnels so I-70--I-79--I-68--I-70--I-81N--PA581--83S--76E--276E... also cannot go direct through major metropolitans. And stops for all railroad tracks. Pays well.)

    I'm with you on the 3k average in a 7 day work week but I'm sorry... 4300 weekly average is too much to buy in a 7 day period average...

    ok ok thats 4300 in 8 days. Here are the details, Most of the time i'm going to southern cali so the vast majority of the time i'm driving in the middle of nowhere and 95% of the time the speed limit is 75 MPH unless of course I'm in the "lovely" state of California then you get to back it down to 55ish.

    I'll use my current run as an example. I left st louis on friday last week, 8/9, I delivered in fresno and then yuba city, ca. total miles out 2,164. Delivered at both stops on monday. Tuesday I went down to salinas to pick my return load total deadhead miles 219. Then I head back to St. Louis 2,012 miles. Total miles run this trip 4,395.

    On most days when I'm just driving I will do about 750 miles a day. take away a little more then 100 when i spend the whole day in cali. The fact I just do two loads a week out and back can make for a far more productive week, I dont have to deal with shippers or receivers but once every 3 or 4 days. Most of the time I'm just driving. I'll routinely stop at the end of the day and my average speed done will be right around 70 MPH, you can make very good time driving though OK, TX, NM, and AZ. Tomorrow is friday, 8 days since I left home and I'm sitting in amarillo, tx 726 miles from the terminal I have 11 hours left on my 70 and I will need fuel tomorrow so I can drive 10.5 hours tomorrow legally so as long as I dont hit any real slow downs I should make it home with about 15 mins. to spare.

    Very cool! So, are you paid mileage or percentage or... ?? A Plainfield, IN 3-4 truck outfiit does UPS loads west and vegetable loads back to Indy. They run the wheels off those trucks and prefer teams.

    A 61/63 Gordon truck (cruise off/on) can make St. Louis to Clackamas, late Thursday afternoon PU to Monday drop at yard--a little slower than your St. Louis-Fresno. But that's one unusually good load in 5 months... most were piddly PU today, Del today. Lots of 'customer contact'. Well, guard shacks.

    I get paid by the mile and it's actual miles not that rand mcnally BS. I'm glad I found this company before I drove for an outfit that gave me an average of 2800 a week and that just didn't work for me.

    For what it's worth I left El Paso Sunday morning last week, delivered in DuQuoin, IL at 7am on Teusday, deadheat to Anheiser Busch in St. Louis for a load back to El Paso (was loaded within 3 hours of checking in). Dropped in the yard on Thursday morning and picked up a Werner trailer load to costco in Laredo for delivery at 6am on Friday. Picked up a load at the Werner yard Saturday morning bound for Stockton, CA that I dropped in our yard yesterday evening with 45 minutes left on my 70. Good for about 3800 miles.

    How fast (governed) is your truck? Sounds like both you and truck are highly motivated! Paid by mile, percentage or...??

    And you can keep moving on rolling recap, no reset required, right?
