I haven't been in this industry long at all (6mo tops). When I started I figured OTR would be perfect because I wanted to travel, and I thought id be fine with only being home 4 days a month. But quickly started to realize that OTR is not the gig for me and Id be better off being local. No problem right?

Well there's one more thing I'm missing. My previous jobs have al been team oriented (IE: fast food, warehouse floor, etc.) And I'm really missing having that team connection of working alongside peers. Is there ANY type of local driving gig that is very team oriented? Or do most local companies differ from OTR in that aspect?

    Thanks

You can look at some dedicated accounts you will interact more with people and your boses will know your name I work dedicated familly dollar for jb they treat me great its a tough job but everyone here helps each other out . And this is the toughest job in the company so not very many new guys make it those of us who do get treated really well though .

Linehaul for some freight companies includes going to "break bulk" facilities where the linehaul driver take all the outbound freight that the local P&D drivers picked up all day and unloads it into areas in the dock for the area the freight is destined too and then reloads freight that the drivers from areas are bringing in for you to load into your trailer(s) to take back to your home terminal to drop for deliveries in your area.. lots of team work (kinda) and drivers trying to get their stuff off of the trailers and then reload to get back home.. long nights mostly dock work more than or sometimes equal to the driving part, but it is local.. nightwork almost certainly. Trucking is not exactly full of teamwork.... to the degree that you are used to.

Give it another year OTR and you'll become a one man show. Seriously when I first started driving the isolation and lack of team work bothered me. Now I wouldn't have it any other way.

You can get used to anything. Life was hard for me when I tried to change it to suit my needs. Once I accepted the way of life I became much happier and efficient.

Maybe local work in a dump truck at a construction company... you see the guys lined up and waiting to dump their loads at road construction projects. Seems to me you would have your alone time while driving form pick up to delivery but plenty of interaction.at both ends.

Kenan is a good company for local/short runs. They also do a lot of runs between Pensacola & Mobile. Probably can take home a grand a week if you can really hustle.

My employer is an affiliate for Quality Carriers . It's a family run operation and drivers are treated like family . If a driver has a family emergency they get him out of the truck ASAP .
I also worked for Eastern Seaboard Packaging . They supply moving supplies to movers and UHaul centers . They have branches in MA , DE , GA , and FL . They treat drivers very well .
