I am not from Des Moines but I bought a house here two plus years ago. I have been OTR with a refrigerated carrier out of Omaha.

I have recently found out Des Moines has a large, modern, automated mail sorting hub and has many carriers running in and out. Looking for some insight on the industry as it works in Des Moines.

    Anyone?

Just as it works everywhere else. Trucks bring freight (in this case mail) in...and trucks take freight (in this case mail) out. What else is there to tell you?

I worked out of the San Francisco Hub for awhile. Was just about the easiest job driving I've ever had.

Back under a loaded trailer, hookup, walk up onto the dock, wait a few moments for a Postal Worker to come out, I rolled down the door, he put the seal on, handed me the paperwork, away I went.
Made a turn with a driver coming out of LA on weekdays, San Diego on Weekends, then returned to SF.
Backed into the dock, Postal Worker unsealed the door, I opened it, then rolled the carts out onto the dock, segmented by Zip Code which was on the Carts in big number. Never spent more than 15-20 minutes from entry into and exit out of the Yard.

Unless the rules have changed, contractors are required to pay the "Prevailing Wage Rate" for the Metropolitan Area in which they haul. Insurance and pension amounts must be in addition to the wage, and follow a per-determined rate.

What companies, that take freight (in this case mail) in and out have a better reputation to work for ... for one thing. Who has the "better" runs, is it always a type of line haul or some type of mulit-stop runs between post offices or swapping out to move mail down the line?

I am assuming all mail hauling operations out of Des Moines are out of the USPS distribution center in Urbandale, IA. near the Pilot truck stop, is that correct?

Right now I am looking at a job with Eagle Express Lines but there are 5 other mail haulers, that I have seen advertising for truckers, that run through Des Moines.

I have four years in trucking. All OTR refer. More home time with a mail hauler sounds nice but the biggest appeal is not waiting at a meat plant or dealing with the pain in the ### shippers/receivers when working OTR.
