I have had friends laugh in my face like I was joking when I told them I was in truck driver training school. My family was mystified. My wife is 100% supportive and more excited than I am at my career change.
I really don't care what others think. I HATED being a carpenter the last 10 years of the 30 I've been a carpenter. I've decided my happiness is more important than image.
I just got my CDL, graduate this coming week and will start my new career after the holidays! Putting in some apps this weekend! I wake up every day now exited with the prospects instead of waking up dreading work.Skydivedavec and jungledrums Thank this. -

As team drivers, you'll have each other for support. That's important your first couple of
years out here, they're the hardest years in my view. There's a lot to learn in a short period
of time to be successful. Your first big hurdle will be finding the right company to keep you
happy. As for others disapproving of your choice to be truckers, do what's right for yourselves
first. My family, more importantly my wife, wasn't happy with me leaving the aviation career
field after 23 years. She was supportive though, and now it's paid off. She sees I'm happy,
and that makes her happy. Don't be fooled though, it's hard work out here, especially with
you two becoming team drivers. Best wishes on a happy and successful driving career together.Skydivedavec and jungledrums Thank this. -
I love how negative these threads always get. We get excited folks who want to enter the industry and we kick them. That's a brilliant plan for colleague camaraderie and industry image.
Is trucking an easy profession? No, it is not. Every side of the industry has it's quirks. I'm 22 and have done oversize, reefer, and tanker work. Reefer and tanker most of it comes down to the shippers/ receivers, oversize it's everything from permitting to just having the confidence to drive down the road 15-ft wide.
But, that being said, I still enjoy getting in the truck, and you can, too.
It's very easy to consider all of the big details, which of you will do the day-shift, which the night shift. Stuff like that.
My suggestion to you is to consider smaller details. Ever notice how a lot of fighting begins over very small details and quibbles? Who gets what part of the storage, how will the sleeper be ordered with all of your stuff in it? It's a (very) small house, treat it as such.
Second, you or your husband, NEVER use the phrase "I'm too tired" if the other needs a hand with backing into a hole at a truck stop or sliding tandems. If the both of you make the effort to help each other on those sorts of things, it'll keep things on an even keel and help prevent one or the other feeling like they're doing the majority of the work.
And, for goodness sake, don't be afraid to walk away from one another at a truck stop. You'll already be spending 18-hours or more of actual moving time in the same vehicle together. It hubby wants to catch a flick and you want a meal, well, don't be afraid to have both of you do what you want and the other what they want.
The times I've teamed that's how we've done it. I'd walk off to find food, the other guy would make calls, and it probably helped keep us from being at each other's throats.
Beat of luck to you. This industry can be a war of attrition sometimes, but keep at it if you enjoy it. If you have an ####### dispatcher, don't be afraid to talk with management about getting set on a different dispatcher.Flatbedder73 and jungledrums Thank this. -
They disapprove because they know my bank account has more 0's than theirs 😂😂😂😂
Skydivedavec and missjhawk Thank this. -
My mother told me that this trucking thing is the work of Satan. I told her that it is a blessing from God... I got pushed out of my 23 yr.healthcare career at 52yrs old for younger replacement (less pay for the company). ... Sick of hospital politics and backstabbing rear end kissers.
I love to travel... and my wife is in trucking school with me... She is the best driver in our group...She is a healthcare provider also... I'm happy she is enjoying it so far...
Learning trucking is intimidating for both of us. I'm afraid I'm going to twist off a drive shaft.... it is so different than driving a car.... and currently she is confused about the 90 degree back up....
We are in a 7 week Tech college program for trucking. It is a blessing that we have a two week break for Christmas beacause the instructor said he still will be at the school during the first week and we can come and practice extra. We also were blessed by getting a grant, our bill was $762.00 each. If something happens, we won't loose out on as much money.
thank you God, Life is great ; ) !!!jungledrums, TruckDuo, Skydivedavec and 3 others Thank this. -
