Called the recruiter at Unimark at and couldn't get the info I wanted. He seemed to be real hesitant to tell me anything thinking I was a former Auto Truck Transport driver. Are these people just scamming drivers into working for nothing with this independent contractor deal? What can one expect to make if you were to sign up? Recruiter told me as low as $650 take home. They are hiring in dallas this week.

Its a non union version of auto truck transport, but you have to join the union anyway without any benefits so you can haul the trucks. Here is some info from their web site. I worked for auto truck. $1.20 a mile may sound like a lot,but a 4 way with a small engine is going to get about 4 mpg you do the math. This is as close to getting you to work for free as you can get!

[IMG] What Expenses Will I Have?

Once you have delivered your truck(s), any expense incurred to get to the next pickup point is your responsibility. However, we will try to reload you as close as possible to your previous delivery drop.

    [IMG] Travel :
On many occasions, Dispatch will work with you to try to alleviate some of your travel expenses. Our drivers utilize buses, airlines, and trains. We will know when you call in for your check call what is the most cost effective mode of transportation for you.

    Overnight Stays :
[IMG] Motels and personal expenses are also your responsibility. Certain expenses, however, may qualify for reimbursement. These expenses will be explained further after being brought on as an independent contractor. Unimark Truck Transport provides all permits, transporter plates, IFTA stickers, and transportation insurance. We will also pay for all approved tolls and bridge fees provided you submit your receipts in a timely manner.

    [IMG] Fuel :
The "Contractor" is required to provide the fuel to get these trucks delivered. Some trucks are fueled by the customer and some trucks, being used, may already have fuel in them. When you purchase fuel to get your truck(s) delivered, you will only purchase enough fuel to ensure delivery of the truck(s).

Yeh, i'm former ATT as well (hopefully will go back to them if and when trucks sales pick back up).

i personally don't think the unimark deal is as good as ATT's as far as i think ATT is much less hassle.

Theoretically, and if the planets line up in just the right order (and they won't all the time) then yes, you could technically make more then you would at ATT on a particular run.

    But:
    a) it's alot of work---in alot of cases with the unimark deal you have to deck as well as undeck the trucks----have you ever worked 24 straight?

    b) The planets generally don't line up all the time in life as you probably well know.

Now, if, all you want to do is run singles---while towing your car/van behind and can get a steady flow, then you might do ok money-wise.

For my money, i feel that a company driver position will be better; With ATT health insurance was totally free, lots of airline miles/hotel rewards etc. Other perks.

It sounded all too familiar to the YRC/ Glen Moore situation. I guess your contract allows them to work even though you are laid off?

Ties in with last 2 posts:

Before i went with Auto-truck, i called unimark to see what the deal was because i thought i would prefer being a contractor/having my own business vs. employee etc.

The recuiter said that they do allow you to tow your own car behind the truck, but only for single units.

So, that's how you would "get home" if you moved only single units. If you're doing boom, 2,3,4 ways, you've got to find your own transp home or to the next move.

a)If you could get a continuous, consistent stream of singles, then i think you could do ok. This is really the key to any business---consistency and continuous stream of business. i mean even if you were selling hotdogs on the street corner, if you make $1 profit for each hot dog and if you continously sold like every minute, then you would do ok.

    b) if yer spouse or something works for an airline, then this gig could be for you.

Not saying it can't work, but i think i would prefer being an employee vs. contractor as far as transporting trucks.

If you want more info, keep rapping as i have done it both ways and am thinking of going back for more.

I wonder if you Unimark Truck Transport veterans can help me out? I'd like to buy a couple of their lowboys from them or the manufacturer. I can't seem to find out who would be the contact at Unimark Transport. Maybe you know or know a manufacturer (besides Delavan). I'd sure appreciate the help.
