no such thing as a anywhere/everywhere wifi network. What you want is an aircard with a cellular data plan.

pick your coverage... depends on who you believe given the amount of mudslinging between ATT and Verizon.

Depends on how heavy of a user you are. All the major carriers limit you to 5 gigs a month, for $60. If you can live with that, of the big three, (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T) Verizon has the best coverage over all. Sprint is the most lenient if you go over, AT&T will hit you with draconian overage charges, so I can't recommend them at all. If the 5 gig limit is something you can't restrain yourself to, then google Millenicom, they have a $70 a month plan with no overage fees whatsoever, and they use the Verizon network. That'd be my first choice if you can afford it.

If you are on a budget, T-Mobile has a $40 a month plan, the coverage is pretty good east of the Mississippi river and into Texas, , but kind of spotty once you get out west. They have a 5 gig plan with no overage charges, but they will throttle you down to <200 kbps for the remainder of the month if you go over. In my opinion, they probably have the best deal for most drivers that are on a budget, as long as you don't spend a lot of your time out west. If Millenicom's $70 a month isn't too steep for you, then go there.

In my experience, if you steer clear of streaming video and file sharing, 5 gigs is enough for most people. Those two activities will get you up there pretty quick. Like I said, steer clear of AT&T, their overage charges are too steep and the price of going over, even if it's just half a gig, is too steep. The 6th gig will cost you $500.00, Sprint and Verizon overage charges are $50 a gig. I have Sprint myself, and they are ok as long as you don't spend too much time in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. They have crappy coverage in those 3 states.

I have verizon and use my phone as the wireless modem. It cost $30 a month for I think 3 gigs. Its great to surf around a little bit but if your going to download movies and music you might need the next plan up. They are all going to be slow compared to being hard wired. The thing I like about using your phone as a modem is your not contracted for internet like you are if you go the wireless card route. You can use it for a few weeks then get it turned off and only pay for the 2 weeks.
