The coolant has leaked into one or more of your cylinders. It's hydrolocked. Don't continue to try starting it as you can potentially bend a rod.

No more attempts at starting it, but it did sound like more than that, something is definitely broken in there. Getting hooked up right now on my way to Jones and Sons in NC. Will keep you guys posted once they find thr problem

So they pulled the valve cover off, and a few small covers on the front of the motor. Air compressor teeth are all gone, damaged all the other gears, rockers are all broken...lots of damage anyway I look at it.
Before I get them to dig deeper in the motor Im considering a factory reman.
Called around a few places and its about 20k for a 3/4 engine that doesnt include the turbo/manifold/intake manifold and air compressor. If I was to do an inframe on this one in this shop He quoted me 16k. Thats not including replacing the front cover which is cracked, used about 2k he said. Plus water pump and air compressor. Either way I look at it its 20k plus. Considered a used engine too but no options are cheap...
I like the factory reman because of the better warranty that comes with it.
Does 20k sound about right for a 3/4 motor?

Is it a nationwide warranty like from a dealer?

Yep, if detroit diesel installs it its a 200,000 miles or 2 years on parts and labour.
If another shop installs its 1 year 100,000 miles on parts only.

I really dont know what I should do here.
Mechanic thinks my bottom end is ok, but he wont know if the crank is damaged until the front cover comes off, and he saod if the crank is junk thats 5k right there. If I get lucky i wont need to touch the bottom end but would stil cost me about 15k to get it back up running

Sounds like you might want to wait until the full diagnosis is in. The warranty makes the decision a little easier too. No matter where you break down a dealer should be close enough to handle the problem with little monetary damage.

I told them to hold off on the teardown, because they want to pull the head and front cover off which is gonna take them some time at $110/hr. if the crank looks like junk then I just wasted all that money on labour. Its like rolling the dice, dont know what to expect here

How they can give you an honest/accurate repair estimate without a full diagnosis?

Sounds like you're looking at a rebuild either way you go? You know the worst case, so it could be that or better. From my experience they usually come out on the cheaper end with repairs.

I would have thought you'd come away less than 15 on a rebuild. I take it Steve is tearing into it?
