Any hope? Should I give it a shot?

I'm wondering if there is a reasonable chance of actually getting a decent trucking job given my situation? I've got age and health history working against me.

Strike 1: I'm an older guy (52) with no trucking industry experience. But my father was a trucker for over 30 years, so I grew up around trucking and know what it *used* to be like, at least until the mid 1970s.

Strike 2: I had a bad heart attack last winter and got 7 stents put in. I take a big handful of blood thinners, BP meds and cholesterol meds every day. Everything is being controlled OK -- BP, cholesterol and all that will test normal. But I doubt if I could pass a cardiac stress test.

On the plus side, I have squeaky-clean driving, criminal and credit records.

My goal would be solo OTR no-touch. I feel that I can handle chaining up and tying down loads, but no way could I load/unload freight by hand.

I would go through a company-sponsored driving school and put my year in with them. But I'm not even going to start down this path, unless I get the sense that my goal is realistic given the strikes against me. Anyone got any insights or advice they can share?

    Thanks!

I think you could do it if you can get notes from your cardiologist saying it's OK for you to drive. You might have to check and see if the meds you are taking will be OK to take while driving. Not impossible, but I think you will have to jump through a few hoops to get it done.
    Good luck

Go get a DOT physical. If you pass it, someone would hire you.

Go to the sort of free clinic or an authorized DOT physical center and see what the Doctor says. My physical at the free? clinic was $70. Swift has a company training program and will send you to a Concentra testing center at their cost prior to orientation. DO Not be candid about your medical condition with recruiter that is between you and the Doctor. You will more than likely not be chaining up with a major training company, nor would you be strapping down chances are you could not do these activities any way. Best of luck give it a shot.

I'm 58 and chain down/ strap every day. I take a bp medicine as well as prostrate pills. Basically if your bp , heart rate and urine test normal, you'll pass the DOT physical, for now anyways. If you have a good work history , then someone will hire you. Good luck to you

well, everyone's goal is to not touch freight............

    here are disqualifications for drivers.............

    §391.41 Physical qualifications for drivers.

    (b)(4) Has no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis, or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure;

now, you had a "bad heart attack"........i think you can forget about it. this will show up in the DOT physical. if you lie, and cajole your way thru a DOT physical, and you die behind the wheel, any insurance the company has for you will be voided, as you falsified documents.

frankly, its time you looked at a less stressful line of work.

    good luck to you.

Not only what Rerun posted but it probably would definitely make your condition worse then it is now. Countless hours of sitting on your butt and eating bad food while getting no sleep and raising your stress level isn't going to help your situation. Plus god forbid anything were to happen to you and you were out in the middle of nowhere. I don't want to disappoint you and sound negative but personally I would opt for something else. Now that is just an opinion. If you are insistent on driving I would at the very least talk to your personal doctor first. Good luck to you and welcome to the forum.

Maybe driving something local with less stress than the OTR seems to entail would work...Local deliveries maybe?...Just a thought...

I had a heart attack too but I got one angioplasti and one stent. I also did cardiac rehab and am in good health now. Im only about to turn 37 too. I can tell you this much after just going through a program and about to hit orientation next week.....

You will need to pass a stress test. In order to pass a DOT you have to have shown that you have done and passed a stress test and got atleast (I think) 6 mets. I got 12 mets and I stopped early to piss. I had done this after rehab and had the documentation so I was good to go.

It will also depend on the meds you take. I take Plavix, Metoprolol, aspisin, Lisinoprel, and something for cholestorol (name avoids me atm lol). Those are fine and have been approved. I know that there are certain blood thinners that would disqualify you but I know Plavix is ok and so are the rest of the medicines I take. You will have to have your doctor sign off on these drugs for the company as well.

Something noone has mentioned is the work well physical. If you cannot pass this, I believe most companies use them, then you will not get hired. While it is not that hard it is designed to get your heart pumping. My BP was fine throughout and I know I am in good health but I will say at the end my heart rate was just about max. If you dont feel you would pass a stress test then you would probably not pass the work well.

In all honesty, unless its a no touch freight job then you probably dont want to be doing this job. Not trying to be harsh but I do know what its like to have a heart attack and mine was minor compared to yours. Even just driving the truck will take alot out of you from the constant awareness you need.

    Hope this helps.

Well, thanks everyone for the frank comments. Looks like that ship has sailed without me aboard. I don't have to like it, but guess I have to accept it.

It's 20+ years behind a desk that almost killed me. Now big business is shipping those jobs off to India and China as fast as they can. One good thing about trucking is that they can't send drivers' jobs offshore.

Well, I've gotta do something different than I have been, but I don't know what. I'll be ###### if I'll wind up behind the counter at the local convenience store.

    Thanks again.
