Okay, so I've been asking questions about the trucking ind. lately. I want to support my husband who really wants to be a OTR trucker. He is bored/tired of our current job. We make decent money and have no bills already and so you guys can probably imagine my hesitation about giving it all up and hitting the road. We both think the road would bring some freedom and great sights..and (crossing our fingers,) good money. I have no interest in driving myself, but I'm happy to ride along. In my head I see a scenario of open road, fresh air, good music on the radio, truckers chirping over the CB...etc etc..etc.. then I know there are not so great things such as no bathroom facilities, close quarters, traffic, bad weather, did I say close quarters already? I'm not so sure I understand how 2 people coexist in such a small space for as long as we plan on doing. Then of course, there is the pay!! How much can we realistically expect to make our first year on the Road if we aren't requesting home time, and will take miles given.?? Theres money to be made, right?

If you run your ### off, you could easily turn $1000+ a week in take home pay running 3000+ miles a week. Keep in mind some starter companies won't allow a passenger until you put in 6 months or more. Mostly due to insurance.

I have been riding, (no driving) full time with my husband since Sept of 2006. I would have it no other way. The close quarters are not so bad, if I get sick of looking at him I just go into the sleeper and watch tv, read or surf the net. It takes a strong couple to be able to live together in the truck, be willing to give up all privacy...including girly issues. Be willing to live with ALL his bad habits, and he yours. Be willing to listen to him gripe when cars cut him off, or just general stupid driving moves, be willing to listen when he gripes about dispatch or the crappy conditions drivers go through, and trust me there are many. Be strong for him and let it run off your back. Trust me drivers have a lot to ##### about!
I cook for him in the truck, read the news to him and he always has a dinner companion. The pay is good IF he is willing to drive the miles and you don't overspend on the road. That takes some budgeting and common sense. Its hard to give exact numbers because there are so many factors to consider. But there is money to be made...

We make it home about every two to three weeks for a weekend. And depending on the company you may not be able to ride with for the first six months to a year.

I like being by his side during the bad weather and such, that way he doesn't have to go it alone. I very seldom sleep while he is driving, if he has to be up, well so do I. As for the bathroom facilities, you can always get a port a potty, WalMart sells them for a decent price, trust me they come in handy in the middle of the night when its freezing cold outside! :)
You will get a lot of slack from non-truckers, for some odd reason people look down on drivers and even more so on the wives who ride full time. As I said before I would have my life no other way. I love being by my truckers side. I love seeing the USA through a windshield, the morning sunrises and evening sunsets. I love seeing all the crazy drivers on the road and meeting new people in every state. My "office" has the best view in the world!

Oh my, the greatest gift I ever got was my Wife beside me in several trucks. She said she had the best job in the world! She never drove, never wanted to. She was my "Navigator". She read maps, only got us lost twice. If you want to find out how much you love someone, put them together in a truck. Quote, " I have the maps, he's lost without me" I always know where he is, & if he's working late I'm with him. Go for it.
