I worked there for 10mths ending feb. of this year. Got a local job or would have never left. Best Otr job I ever had. People were down good good folks. I heard they started do that bs of telling u where to fuel and starting electronic logs. Sad to see the best Otr job I ever had start to head Down the #######(driver wise). It's mostly beef loads out to the north east, with a backhaul straight back to west Texas or Oklahoma. Trks were nice. APu on all trks. I also never dealt with the idiots they put as driver managers. Called the planners personally and never had a problem rolling. 15k miles every month. Safety managers is kind of a over achiever. Not a bad thing to say about any of management. Fleet wash was at yard 3 days aweek.(free wash). New tires(no recaps on anything. 1 day orientation. Left out that night from rockwall to Massachusetts. Recruiter is one of the nicest ladies I ever met that would do anything to help. Makes me sad to read here she isn't calling anyone back.( must have got a new recruiter). Didn't like the whole fed ex paperwork tho. Long trips plus fed ex( u pay for by the way) make so bi weekly chks low. P.s when u quit they r kind of sour and hold your chk for 2 weeks.
Any info on the new J S Helwig and Sons?

i would say if they haul meat sucks, heavy loads mostly not palletized and they take forever to load those friking trailers from 12 hours to 1 entire day,and u have to wash them first,is just to much work for that kind of money, run before u hit oriantation, better stay on dry van operation,my opinion.
-
No swinging meat. All box and most was pallets. The beef plant washes trl for u. Preloaded drop n hook. Yes sometimes gotta wait but with the miles u ran could always use a day break. U only picked up meat once a week so not bad

Yes, the miles are good. Typically 1500-1800 each way. Meat loads are usually preloaded b4 you can arrive but occasionally will have to wait.
Appointment times are well scheduled to maximize time and get the occasional restart at your convenience and preferred location. They will not "over-book" you and they have enough freight and freight type to assign the correct loads to maximize available future hours and move drop times, etc.
people are good. Entire fleet will be elogs probably by end of 2012. I'm enjoying the paper logs for now. I rarely seek home time, and I run all the miles I can handle, week after week. For single driver operation, the freight/length-of-haul doesn't get much better.
Trucks are "so-so", shop get a "B+" from me, but all in all the equipment is comfortable, and all have APU's.
Not easy to get on. They have a low turn-over and are growing slowly. But if you can get on, I think most would be happy here. They are not too big, but big enough and right in that sweet spot to provide a good OTR driving experience. -
Hello. I mostly agree with stexan. I work at helwig and have been here about 6 months. I will give you my opinion. Here at helwig the staff are great people and really nice. The owner is there every day in day to day operations. You can just walk into his office and sit down for a chat along with everybody there. I have been getting roughly 10500-12000 miles a month
the equipment here is clean and taken care of well. If something needs to be fixed you call in and they ask if your coming toward the yard in terrell and if not you get whatever fixed on the road. I have run to california a few times and love working here. They did start a fuel route program but NO 7-11's mostly pilot or loves. And they will route you around toll roads if possible. There is occasional sitting in the meat plants but has improved since I started here. But you get paid to sit and wait for your load. The fleet is transitioning to elogs now, but so is everybody else. They have flexible hometime, if you need an extra day or two just let them know and it wont be any problem. Anyone have a specific questions ask me either in the forum and I will answer to the best of my knowledge. Be safe out there drivers

Forgot to add on home time. If u ask for 3 days and they need u they will offer to buy your home time if u r willing to sell it.. 100$ a day plus what u make in miles. Thought this was pretty cool since I love money. Lol

My husband is thinking of going to work here.....are any of you still employed there and is it still just as good as when you made these posts

They're a great outfit, especially if you live in N TX. They primarily run meat loads from the plains states to the northeast and harrisburg is not a bad location but I'm not sure what their hiring policy is regarding home location. They haul plenty into NJ and backhaul a lot of Dollar General stuff out of eastern PA and Jersey

We live in Pa just outside of Harrisburg so we're familiar with what that's like.

He will be there on Tuesday for orientation
