Just wondering who does and how you deal with it. I myself have never gone OTR I've always been a local driver. After my daughter was born, my wife and I struggled to make ends meet at my former fuel hauling gig. I took a great job that has the TOP pay for the area and pays 100% benefits for the family. It's amazing insurance. I worked for UPS and this plan is right on par with them. But... I travel 65 miles one way to work. I work nights and do 10-12 hours a day in the winter and 11-16 in the summer. I love everything about the company and the job. The commute hurts but my wife doesn't have to work and we don't have to worry about money. I love the weekends because I get to spend time with my girls and it awesome to see the relationship my wife and daughter have built. I put up with this so my little girl can have her mama and not be in daycare. Any other drivers in a similar situation?
Any local drivers commute a long distance to work?

Is there any chance the hours may change with seniority? From nights to days or less hours etc. anything time on the job that can change for the better?

Yes dude, I don't travel as far as you do, but it is pretty far. My commute takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour on the way there and 28 minutes on the way back, about a 33 mile one-way trip. My first job, worked me 8 hours a day, and for that I commuted 88 miles one-way, 5x per week. That is what I did to get experience as a driver, to be home every night with my family. I've never gone OTR a day in my life.
But yeah, the commute sucks so bad because I deal with the entire SF Bay Area rush hour traffic coming back into the valley, so the roads all bottleneck at major intersections. Half of my commute is spent in gridlock/stop and go, and avoiding rear ending somebody. When it rains, there's a fatality accident almost three times a week and I leave extra early for this because people don't value their own lives. I seriously, seriously hate my commute so much, that this led me to taking a new job with better pay, much closer to my home, and avoiding the bay area rush hour traffic. I'm sure you know what the Altamont looks like at 8AM from Tracy to Livermore, right? That's how getting to work is for me, at least on my way there. It's not so bad on my way home. But I only have a couple of more days to put up with this.Air Cooled Thanks this. -
Traffic is only gonna get worse . . . not better, don't mind getting paid OT to sit in it but when OFF too??Last edited: Oct 14, 2016

Nah not really. Zero complaints on the job. The other shift is days. We all work about the same hours BUT the day guys have to fight traffic going home. Doesn't matter if your headed to SF or out of San Jose- your in traffic. I myself deal with zero traffic before or after work unless CalTrans is taking a coffee break and closes a lane. There is a possibility that I may be in a different yard next year that's only 20 miles away...TROOPER to TRUCKER Thanks this. -
I hear ya man. I'm stoked for you taking that new job. We will definitely cross paths while your training at the racks in SJ. I deliver to a yard right across the street for Chevron-my old stomping ground Oakland/13st. Hopefully tomorrow is smooth for us-lots of rain coming in. -
