Hi guys,
I'm a local food service driver for the nations 3rd largest broad line food service distributor, and the nations largest family owned broad line distributor. Were in 22 states recently bought out a company in Texas named Glazier foods and the company is based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan and has it's own chain of grocery stores and it's initials get confused with Golden State Foods who is a large McDonald's distributor. We don't do McDonald's.
Anyhow here's my thing and here's kind of what I'm thinking, I don't really mind my job delivering food for whatever reason it's alright, however it's probably not the answer for me either I am somewhere in-between.
I've never actually done any kind of OTR for the big boys like Schneider or Werner and at this stage of the game can by pass all that, what would be new to me is log books, and bridge formulas and scaling sliding tandems never done that before I know if the equipment works properly (key words being if) sliding the tandems isn't that big of a deal.
Anyhow here is where I am at in life, I don't have things like kids, and girl friends and property. So I was kind of sitting around going, why move out and put my self in debt which I don't believe in when I don't really have to it's not that I'm cheap just don't feel like having to force my self into a daily grind for 30+ years when I might not have to. What I mean by that is, I go out get a mortgage and all that stuff now the company I work for has all the leverage, right now they have no leverage and I want to keep it that way.
I like working, but I guess I like working on my terms and I was strongly strongly considering running the road for USF Holland as a linehaul driver. Come home on the weekend and be gone all week. I know this kind of sounds a little like the book that came out in the late 40's called On The Road but what I'm kind of figuring is why not run the road and save up my money which is what I kind of do right now ha-ha and in a few years be able to live debt free I mean I know I will always have to work, but I guess my whole thing is work hard now for the next 10-15 years and work less hard later. I mean I'm not saying I would never own property or anything like that, I'm just saying I would rather be able to come back and throw the money down and then get a job weather it be driving a charter bus or working for an air freight company, but who the heck knows, by the time that happens might have bid up to a better run and be on easier street making real good money no sense in quitting then.
I guess what I'm asking is do any of you guys out there mostly just live on the road and then come home on the weekend or maybe once every 5-6 weeks and home doesn't need to be you're home per-say, but maybe you have a house you rent with other people or have family that they have a room or whatever just asking is all.
Any of you drivers out there without property?

Buy a duplex or tri or quad. Rent the other units out. Let the renters pay your mortgage and live in the other close to free. If you make it back every weekend you can keep an eye on things and no mortgage, Kind of. This gives you a write-off and a base address. In time a retirement income.

I did that for my first couple years. Now I'm married, got a kid, and recently bought 10 acres up in montana. living out of the truck is fun for awhile but gets old quick. Just remember most of the sights worth seeing are places trucks can't go.

Many drivers have posted they are doing what you are thinking about and putting most of their paychecks in savings of some sort.
Use a relatives address and you won't need to pay rent, just pick up mail there.
Look at some good OTR companies that have Tripac APU's or other nice ammenities so you'll be comfortable living in the truck. Some OTR trucks these days have satellite TV, refrigerator, XM radio already installed. Submit some applications and see if any job offers.
Here's an example from Holland Enterprises Inc.:
RUN EAST, WEST & NORTHWEST
- 1,610 Miles Avg. Length
- 11,000 Miles Per Month Solo
- Air Ride Tractors and Reefer Trailers
- Cruise Control
- Qualcomm
- Satellite TV and Radio
- Air Slide 5th Wheel
- Engine Brakes
- Power Mirror
- Tri-Pac APUs on every truck in fleet
- And More!!
- With 1/2 cent performance increase every 6 months
- Average Pay $57,000
- Top performers mid $70's
