Also, it should have an on/off switch on the dash so it works like a jake. It comes on full though, no different power levels and it should shut itself off at idle like a modern jake (unless you pull on the manual valve).

We had oil temp guages on ours. If the oil got too hot, like on a long steep downgrade in the summer, it would blow a seal. The mechanics were dialed in on that. They could replace one in no time. Lot of grumbling went on if they had to do it very often.

I think they used them for pump engines on their fuel barges but maybe they just made mooring bouy anchors out of them.
Sause was always good at keeping old stuff running.

I actually used a water valve plumbed in to the cab on my old Cummins.
When I hit a hill I would start cranking it down and away I would go.
It was very touchy though, if you weren’t carful the thing would run away with you and you had to crank it back the other way quickly or risk scattering the engine.

Grippin the return lines was so common many of the major LTLs had gone to great lengths to grip proof their fuel lines. One of the outfits I worked for had wire mesh surrounding all the fuel lines.

Anybody ever reach out the window while you were on a hard pull and spray ether in the air cleaner?

Here is a picture of the retarder on my B model without the clutch. It has jakes as well: 0922182119_resized.jpg
And here you can see the oil lines to the cooler a bit better: 0922182119a_resized.jpg

Was also common to put a "stinger" in a Cummins PT pump back in the day. Easily made by using a compression fitting with O-rings around a small screwdriver. You would screw it into the back of the governor housing on the pump, and it would bump the governor making the rpms increase. Didn't really give you anymore power, but you could go faster.
Cummins power increase was done by button change, pump throttle shaft shimmed open, aneroid tampering, dime in the return line, shimming governor springs with spark plug washers, run the return line up through the cab through the shifter hole, step on it with your heel when you got to a hill, etc.

    No,nobody did this,lol..........

For a while you didn't even have to reach out the window to do that. There was a button on the dash for the ether injection.
The manufacturer soon put in a sensor override that wouldn't let the ether button work after the temperature got up, or something similar.
