I sure do love those smoke rings on cold start ups, of the old trucks. It reminds me of what my dad did with his Winston's.

Yes,there was a thermal temp sensor on the side of the block, once there was heat the electrical circuit was open,no more ether. There were some old mechanical ether injectors, though. You put a can of ether in,and it had a mechanical cable to give it a shot for starting. My Cat track loader has that set-up from the factory, dangerous if used improperly. You could hit it anytime.

LMAO... I can totally picture that in my head.

Ever set the hand throttle going across the desert, stepped out on the running board while keeping one hand on the wheel and took a leak? Stepped back in an kept on?

    Haha

Never stepped out while moving, but I did put a Vernier hand throttle control on my IH 4300. Poor mans cruise control, just screw it out till your at the right speed and relax, way before electronics. Worked good on places like I-80 in Nebraska,up in the Dakotas, etc.,but when you got to the grades, back on the foot.
Funny, drove for decades cross country with mechanical engines,no cruise control, shifting all day long, foot always pressing the gas. In the later years with my computerized N-14 500,you'd drive all day,and hardly ever touch anything but the radio, maybe shift three gears all day. Got so spoiled,I wouldn't drive the truck around the block without setting the cruise, lol.
    Sunday morning geezer ramblin'.

Love stories like this. Wish I could go back and experience the times I’ve heard so much about.
