I knew it was coming, but I still don't think it's right that because a state chooses not to be part of IFTA that they can bill you for payment in advance to get a permit in their state. My bill was just shy of 4,000.00

Sure they will give it back after a couple of years of filing and paying on time, But that is not the point, what if every state suddenly decided that they would rather collect their own ton/mileage/fuel tax? 48 states times a minimum of 4,000.00 (I run very few trips to Oregon) is a total of 192,000 DOLLARS!

This whole west coast emissions, speed limit, tax issue is getting a little ridiculous.

So don't go there, or pay for a permit at the POE (I think you can do that, but really don't care).

I tore that page out of my atlas right after their big neighbor to the south. Too much hassle.

NO, you can't buy a permit at the scale, you need it before you enter the state. Your right, I don't have to go there, and yes I could rip that page out of my atlas, but where do you draw the line? One page?, 4 pages? 10?

When did they stop selling them at the port? In the past you could always buy one there, not for an entire year, but per trip.

As many as it takes. If the state is too much hassle or cost to do business in, I don't go there. Some people have more tolerance for it than I do. Others live there and for whatever reason will deal with it rather than move. I get that. Just pointing out that everyone has a choice. The state can choose to impose onerous regulation and taxes, just as well as carriers can choose not to serve their market.

Just telling you what I was told, we always purchased our permit over the phone and paid with a credit card, now they are trying to do away with as much office payroll as possible (and I am sure a bunch of credit card fees) and I CAN understand that, no problem. They are going to a quarterly system much like New Mexico has, and again, I have NO PROBLEM with that, as we have no issue with NM.

But no other state that I know of, and we run them all, requires you to pay up front and hold money in escrow, hell, I'm a small potatoes company, I can't even imagine how many millions they will have in this holding account.

So, in other words what you are saying is that the ICC agreement is a worthless document?

That, long with the UCR and any other attempt to make for uniform commercial traffic. Many states concoct ways around it. Most are less burdensome than Oregon w/d and Cali CARB. I don't like paying KY w/d tax, or KY, IN, and VA surcharge, or AR and KS ad valorem, or various states intrastate authority and foreign corp taxes, and so on, but at least it's not a number greater than the profit I could depend on gaining by going there. I've got enough hands in my wallet as it is.

You can buy a permit but the cost is mileage X3.... Minimum 100.00 dollar deposit to escrow account.... Roughly 500.00 to buy permit unless coming in from vancouver area n just running into portland n back out

Ok, gotcha, when I asked the lady said they were going to do away with it, keep something else in mind, my escrow cost is based on our registered weight of 54,000 I'm sure if we were 80,000 it would be a higher mill rate.

Just pisses me off, had to rant, back to your regularly scheduled programing.:biggrin_2551:
