Had 5:13's in a T800 daycab with a 400 Cummins, and 4:88's in a T600 with a 425 Cat. The T800 hauled grain, the T600 pulled a flat hauling lumber and drywall. They pulled great but were absolutely murder on fuel and IMO weren't needed. The T600 with 4:88 was so slow in 1st you could walk faster, you never started a load below like 4th gear and topped out at like 75mph. Each truck since then has progressively gotten higher gearing, and ironically pulled heavier loads. What I've noticed is you usually lose traction way before you run out of power. I pulled a bottom dump for a while with a 550 Cat and 3:70's and got stuck a few times, gearing was never an issue even off road.

Personally I'd have to have a REALLY REALLY good reason to ever get one below 3:70's again (last truck I ordered had 3:36's and I love it) low is still low enough to get in and out of most places a truck should be. If lower is needed it had better have tracks and say CAT on the side.:biggrin_2559:

One truck with a 2 speed 52K rear, 3.70/5.04. The other truck has 4.30. Happy with both trucks. Haul heavy(?) up to 150K and the low gears are nice coming out of the woods. And the clutch certainly appreciates the low gears under these conditions....
As J said, it is tougher on fuel, but tough to have everything in one truck. Has to be a compromise somewhere, so i buy more fuel....:biggrin_25526: The 2 speed truck is nice, but heavier and of course more expensive.

5.13's are getting down there...:yes2557:. Had a truck at one time with 5.29's but also had the big 12.00X24" rubber, so offset the low gears somewhat.

I have 4.10's, 295-75-22.5 tires, and rockwell 10 speed. Tops out at 75 due to gov. If it was not for the gov it would be at the 2100 rpm limit soon after. At 70mph I'm at 1750 rpms. The hight gears would be fine if it had a 13 to 18 speed. As for off road, and acceleration, the higher gears are the best. If you want the basic 10 speed I would go 3.70 or lower.

I have a 1988 pete with Cummins BC IV 400 with RT 14609 with 3:55 . When we did engine swap we got rid of the 9 spd and went with a RTO 14915 OD . Then I came upon a newer set of Eatons DS 402 with 3:90 run it till the frt rearend went South so I pulled both out and went back with 4:11's at times with this truck being a 3 axle bobtail dump with a 10 yrd pup dump wish that I had gone ahead and put 4:33s in but am getting about 5:62 MPG with the 4:11s and still will run a lot faster than I want to go . But if the 15spd goes out I am putting a 18spd in its place .
