Umm Typically I pull fresh or frozen foods. I've yet to haul raw meat. But I do know that some drivers do haul meat and also agricultural products. seeing as I've never done either, no idea how common that is.

My homebase is Atlanta, Ellenwood. But they usually shoot me up north day 1 and I run the med west to East. So think NB to PA. and down to Kansas.

To get me North asap, I do at times pull dryvan or dryvan loads in a reefer. And sure, if ever I'm stuck in a bad spot, they will send me on a dry van run. Heck My Fleet Manager has even called me and said "Drive North On HWY X and don't stop till I call back." This I know to mean she's getting me out of dodge and set up for a pending load.

Home Time; I'm a 11 on 3 off guy. But I find that too short on the road. So last time out I was gone for 24 days and this time 14.

They can easily get you Out of Maryland. I wouldn't see that as a problem.

So for me it's almost a regional job. I spoke to one guy and he's just about local driving reefer, while another guy at Gary said he's all over hell's acre.

Also lately as in the last month, I've yet to pull an old trailer! I heard they are taking the older reefer trailers out of service. No idea if that's true. But so far, mine have been pretty good.

Lastly I have to say I have one of the best Fleet Managers. (IMO and for my style of driving.) I often drive with 2 preplans waiting and at minimum 1. Rarely does she have me run without an idea where I'm going next.

My truck sucks, I have the window duct taped closed, and reverse is a 50/50 shot and forget 5th gear. But I roll, and only have 5 months on with the company so I can't complain, there'll be time enough for new trucks.

OH!!! Better keep the van super clean and fueled or crap will fall on you from great hights lol.

    sly1 Thanks this.

ron, i have been thinking of reefers lately too, i did school in april, told them to stick me in van till i figure out what i want. i am trying to find out if reefers get longer loads or more southern routes, i live in wisconsin and run almost purely out east, once to texas which was a disaster, full day at a paper mill waiting while they made it, then 5 runs of less than 250 miles, i am in florida now from P.A. not a bad run, first time this far south. do we generally just stay east? other than a few bad days like 70 miles i have been very happy with my miles. just trying to learn a little more about the company i guess. i know they have decent flatbed routes in my area. not sure i want that though.

do trip lengths really depend on how long you are out? i have had such random miles, one time out i had 1450, 1250, 1100 then a 1200 home, awesome time out, then i have had stuff like 140,240,190,360,250, ugh, hard to make money like that. i guess it seems to average out.

dont think im complaining, i just got my actual manager and it seems fine, not their fault for my 50 mile day this week, i sat all day at the shipper.

I am considering to apply to Roehl. I do not have my CDL and I live in North Carolina. I am willing to go OTR to get the experience. I am also in interested in flatbed as well. Any input is most appreciated :)

i have never driven before, i like roehl, i had one bad week, but looking at my check it didnt hurt it much, just did alot more shorter runs that week. i am finishing a 1250 mile load in the morning, then i have 620 after that, which will put me at the edge of my 70 hours. i never ever sit long unless its something at the shipper or consignee, roehl always has something pretty fast after delivery.

I answered much of this in a message sent to you. My miles can be random but for the most part I get 400 mi in a day. most dispatches are around 600 mi, 700 mi. I get 900 mi runs to get me home from the heartland, and same to get back to the area. So far it's almost like a regional job, just out of my home state lol. But I don't sit at truck stops, don't even get resets unless I have 0 hrs for a day. But plz talk to others cause some guys complain. I dont get it as loaded Reefer vans sit waiting to be delivered.

I think you can do 7/4 7/3 right away but have to wait 6 months for 7/7. I just dropped off a student who was doing 7/4 7/3 and he was going to be in his own truck for evo 3 so he would not mess up the other guys rotations.

    Hey
I am getting my DMV physical Friday and I think I am going to Marshfield in a few weeks for training. I have had contact with Central and Maverick. Just going with Roehl based on favorable comments and gut feeling. Recruiter wants me to state my interest in type of truck. I am leaning towards Flatbed.I am 57 yrs old and still in decent shape being in construction. Will miss watching the mighty Vols!
