Based on my zip code, the only fleet I qualify for is Van National. Is Canada required on Van National?

technically, canada isn't required for anybody, but for national, you're expected to be available for it, and if you aren't, then your bonus amounts are reduced a cent or two. or possibly you might not be hired-- ask the recruiter.

if you have a certain level of legal ding on your record, then canada may be unavailable because they won't let you through.

canada is easy, though, or at least always has been for me, with flats, vans, or curtains. i've had paperwork problems only three times, and in all cases (once canada, twice US) it was because the border officials messed up their own documents.

in general, the people are friendly, the roads are logical, the truckstops are easy to find, and the border paperwork is always straightforward and usually simple. but not everybody has had the same experience as me.

Going to and from Canada is easy for the most part as long as you dot your i's and cross your t's. It is just a paperwork game, and as long as you follow the rules, then no worries. I never had any big problems, had my truck inspected a couple of times, had to wait on students to be processed through imigration a few times, sometimes had to wait in a long line of traffic at customs. Just don't use your cell phone in Canada, unless you have a plan that allows you to. The big carriers charge you like 69 cents a minute and up for voice and more for data. If you have a smart phone, you need to shut it off before you cross the border, and leave it off til you get back!

I'm interested in the Roehl Truck School. Can someone with damaged credit still get his CDL and get a job there?

Yep. My credit's shot due to an ##*hat ex, but that's another story...if you can get someone with credit score above 500 to co-sign, Roehl will float the loan. Failure to finish school, make the 120k mile payback, etc...causes loan to default at a rate of 18%, ppayments around $140/mo. Be aware, though, the loan is only for tuition, not for the "extra" fees...so $2800 is all it covers.
Can you tell I'm looking into the same thing? :biggrin_2559:

Ya can if ya don't tell anybody ! Really not sure, but there was a guy that grilled all the time at roehl. I think his small grill used the small coleman propane bottles.
    But a 20lb bottle ? Hazmat ?

its not considered Haz mat unless its over 1001lbs....but I wouldn't suggest carrying a 20lb bottle of propane around in a truck...where would you put it??? its just not a good Idea...I really dont think the company would like that at all...lol

I had a bit of an eye-opener just a little bit ago. My boyfriend fixes trucks and trailers, and a customer dropped off his rig. I got the go-ahead to take a little peeksie inside (I had to, it's got a sleeper, I'm used to daycabs...). Umm...wow. He's got a teeny sleeper. It's stand-up, but not by much (good thing I'm not real tall), a twin sized bed, and shall we just say there's not much room to get between the front seats OR much floorspace in the back?
What's the "standard" Roehl truck setup? Single bunk unless you're a trainer/team, I would guess...And I would guess GRAY interior. *LOL* And rubber floormat, not carpeting...but is there usually a little elbow room in the sleeper area?
All curiosity, I'm not (terribly) claustrophobic...
