Maverick will bus you to Orientation or you can rent a car, fly, take a train, hitch hike, etc to get there when you are scheduled to begin. Maverick will reimburse you the price of a bus ticket. Maverick will also tell you they prefer you not drive your personal vehicle to orientation because if you finish orientation you'll be assigned with a driving instructor that may or may not live near your home. They try try try try try try try try to do this but it doesn't always happen. So if you were to drive your vehicle to orientation, complete orientation, get assigned to a driving instructor that lives in for example, Texas, complete driver training with your instructor, successfully evaluate out and get assigned a truck in for example, Gary, In, they fly or bus you up there to get your Maverick truck and your vehicle is sitting at HQ in Little Rock. How do you get your vehicle back home?

For the NPs: I know the chances of the road test being put back into the training program during Orientation but a simple straight line backing course on the simulator would eliminate a lot of headaches, frustrations, damage to company and customers equipment, . especially if the student attended a cdl school that had on site testing administered by the cdl school personnel. I have discussed this with a few other instructors and they agree, they have the same problem with students that attend schools having on site testing administered by instructors from the school. THEY ARE NOT TAUGHT HOW TO SAFELY BACK UP A TRACTOR WITH A TRAILER ATTACHED. I will take the time necessary to teach someone to do so but I think its ridiculous that the company's fuel and equipment assigned to a driving instructor who's statistics and performance of thereof are used to determine the driving instructors income should be abused to teach someone something that should have been taught in cdl school. My current student has spent in one week, over two hours learning how to straight line back because the cdl school he attended only required him to pull the tractor trailer into a corridor of cones the same length of the truck and trailer and back out without hitting any of the cones and VOILA....here's your license!!! BULL!@#$ and should be illegal.

Hey everyone, I posted a few questions awhile back trying to decide to go with TMC or Maverick. After carefully researching everything I possible could about both companies I have made my decision to go with Maverick. I should get my CDL on May 18th and will begin the process. I only have one concern that keeps bothering me and that is the physical at Maverick by their doctor. I took my DOT physical already and got my medical card but I'm still concerned. I'm a retired Marine with 20 years of service and in 2008 my convoy was hit by an IED and killed a few Marines. They diagnosed me back then with an Anxiety disorder and put me on two different medications. Neither medication gives me any problems and the combination of the medication works very well. Just really concerned that this might disqualify me or even send me home. The doctors who diagnosed me and put me on the medication were Naval Docs and are out of the Navy by now so I have no way of getting a hold of them. I would like to get opinions from you drivers as to what you think about this dilemma for me? I have a wife and 2 daughters and will be quitting my job before I head to Little Rock for orientation, so I need to make sure I get through this and get a job offer. Thanks again for all of your input and direction. Stay safe out there and hopefully by the end of June I'm working along side of all you.

Before I forget it, I really hope I made the right choice between these two companies as far as miles per week and the pay check. I live in southern Illinois and want to be with the flatbed division. Sorry for the long post guys. Thanks again for putting up with a "wannabe".

I think that you have chosen wisely Gunny. If you have not already done so, call Maverick Recruiting Dept and ask for Mason. He will steer you straight thru the process and should be able to give you the answer to your question. However, the best thing to do is to actually go thru the doctor at NLR in order to know FOR SURE. I would think that you will be fine. As far as your home location, you would be a good fit for the US Regional Flatbed division. We all love to try to help out new guys with their questions. If you want to see some photos of a recent Maverick Orientation and Barn Training, go to Razororange's thread called http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/maverick/202583-my-maverick-experience.html

Don't want to steer you wrong, ask your recruiter what meds are and are not allowed. Give her/him the names of your meds so THEY CAN CONFIRM, BEFORE YOU ATTEND ORIENTATION the meds are allowed. Would really stink to quit your job and come to orientation only to find out due to your meds, you wouldn't be hired.

    Hey Sarge,
I applied to Maverick and need to get some medical stuff straightened out before I'm approved. I applied for the TCD. Personally I just wanted to let you know I would rather have an instructor like you. You seem to be straight forward, don't sugar coat things (hate sugar coating anything, well unless it is donuts, but I can't eat those anyway), thorough, and well organized. Not sure why the other person would have a problem with that, but I guess to each their own. I do appreciate you sharing your list of what to bring on the truck. It gives me an idea of what I need to bring to NLR for after I get through orientation and TCD training and then placed with an instructor. For me anyway your information and input has been very useful, especially coming from an instructors perspective.
