Trying to weigh some options out, since I'm currently on the verge of starvation with my carrier.
Desires:
- Home at least "weekends" (even if that equates to doing a 34) but more is better.
-More miles / better paychecks
-No overnight/linehaul type work - I'm not comfortable doing exclusively overnight driving.
-I'm based in southern NJ. My weekly commute is about 65miles each way. I would like to keep it around or under that if possible...
-Currently only have 4 months exp. and am 21years old.
I've only driven dry van, but I'm intrigued by curtainside. No real interest in outright flatbedding, and definitely don't want to do doubles/triples. And know absolutely nothing about tanker work.
Here's my situation:
I earned my CDL through company-sponsored training in April. I've been driving Northeast Regional with them since. They aren't a bad company, but my miles aren't anywhere near what they could and should be...I'm averaging around 1400-1600 miles a week at this point. It's pathetic. I'm getting assigned loads that should be giving me more miles, only to be told "Actually, relay that over to ___" effectively chopping the load in half.
I also happen to have a contract that is based on miles ran not time employed. I estimated it would take me a year and quarter - a year and a half to be out of it. As it stands now, it won't be until sometime into 2017 that I'm free and clear.
The only thing I don't particularly mind is the fact that I do get home weekends - sometimes home Friday night and out Monday morning, but usually for somewhere between 34-48 hours.
I would like to stick things out with my carrier for as long as possible and gain as much experience as I can, but it's looking progressively worse. I don't want to jump ship, especially not when I'd owe them money, but with the way my checks have been trending, I'm not sure how much longer I can afford to stay if I have other options.
Can anyone make any recommendations to me?
Any recomendations for NJ - Limited Exp

with being in south jersey your options are going to be somewhat limited. north jersey has far more options but your dealing with commute. i run similar miles and get paid by the load instead of miles and make about 1k a week.if a company is paying you per mile to run regional you are getting screwed. the only thing i can recommend is to talk to jersey drivers when picking up and dropping freight.

Do you have tanker/hazmat endorsements? If so, then that's the way to go. Schneider Bulk hires at 21 yrs. old.
You're limited by being only 21 yrs. old and want weekends at home plus a good paycheck. Look at food service jobs and and also some coast to coast outfits where at least you'll get some miles. If you're stuck in the Northeast running for a mega carrier, odds are you won't make big paychecks.
