I just got my license and was doing fine until they traded the standard transmission I was driving for a automatic, that thing jerks backwards and I automatically hit the brake and have to do it over and over.
Any tips on backing an automatic?

LOL, Sounds like my first experience! You have to keep your left foot on the brake somewhat when backing. I drove one for two weeks and hated it.

Don't hit the brakes unless you want to stop moving.

Maybe someone currently running one will chime in, but I've heard "5%" from a few drivers.
Essentially you just hit the throttle enough to build up to 100rpm above idle, the tranny will engage, and you can back up at idle when you let off the throttle. -
Depends on the transmission . The cascadia I'm in (DT12) will start rolling as soon as you release the brake pedal, much like a regular trans in a car...unless you are on an incline and the hill start assist has engaged.

I don't drive auto, but........

If it is the DT12 transmission that's in Freightliners, then it has what is called CREEP MODE.
Essentially, as stated above, it acts like a car tranny and will start to move when brake pedal is released. It gives enough power to back you up just fine.
Besides, you shouldn't be touching that accelerator when backing up....That's just asking for problems.ExOTR Thanks this. -
put in reverse, then back into nearest lake.

i have automatic, as much as i dont like it it doesnt jerk when backing up, i dont have that issue so dunno whats goin on there

The newer automatics no longer jerk. I don't have one of the newer ones yet since I am waiting for the latest trucks to come out. I treated it like holding a car with a manual on a hill. slowly pressing the pedal into you find the sweet spot where it moves.
