One example I know of in Chicago, a bridge marked 13'4" is only to keep OTR drivers away. While anything marked below that measurement is pretty exact for the flat-bedders.

And "close" is NOT good enough IMO.
Not all tractors and trailers are created equal. If your truck meaures 13'2" under the OP's conditions, you'll then know if you should attempt going under a bridge marked 13'4" which 99% of other drivers wouldn't even attempt because they think the measurement of 13'6" is somehow all encompassing.
Also, if the bridge is marked higher than your measurement and you still hit it, someone else is now at fault.Giuseppe Ventolucci, brian991219 and TheDude1969 Thank this. -

I wouldn't recommend using that as a barometer if you have flexible whips though. They'll bend while you're moving.201 Thanks this. -
