One example I know of in Chicago, a bridge marked 13'4" is only to keep OTR drivers away. While anything marked below that measurement is pretty exact for the flat-bedders.

What he said! If my rig is pushing 13'5" and I'm approaching a 13'6" bridge, I better know about it

    Legality.

And "close" is NOT good enough IMO.

Not all tractors and trailers are created equal. If your truck meaures 13'2" under the OP's conditions, you'll then know if you should attempt going under a bridge marked 13'4" which 99% of other drivers wouldn't even attempt because they think the measurement of 13'6" is somehow all encompassing.

Also, if the bridge is marked higher than your measurement and you still hit it, someone else is now at fault.

I can run a tape up and get a "close enough" don't need to the 1/4". Besides, very few bridge measurements are accurate anymore

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean YOUR measurement should not be accurate.

    Control the things you can.

Hi sawmill, Most of that's true, except the last one. Some company trucks I've seen, don't even have stack(s) anymore. I cut my stacks down, so I could bobtail in Chicago, and take short cuts I couldn't go with a wagon, but just in case, I had my CB antenna's set at 13'7", and if my antenna's cleared, I was good to go.

Good trick. I like it. :)

I wouldn't recommend using that as a barometer if you have flexible whips though. They'll bend while you're moving.

What If: your equipment is rolling on low pro 22.5 tires. perhaps, your rig height is: 13' 4". Using this model, then your safe to proceed under neath the 13' 4" bridge

Not an assumption I would personally care to make. I'd feel better if I measured.
