Hi! I am about to start my CDL training in Massachusetts. I was wondering if anyone got their start driving for the Army as an 88M. I am seriously considering this path instead of starting out with one of the big companies that hire inexperienced drivers. I have not even begun to research this so any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated!

Most companies are not going to consider military driving as experience. They just bunch them all togehter and feel that driving in a convoy or on base is not the same as OTR. But by all means do not leave it out. Just be prepared if they say you have no experience. Some companies will take you over others because of your military services. They know you're mature and can take orders.

There's lots of drivers that started with military equipment. I'm not sure what you're trying to ask. My advice to you is make a goals list of what you want and where you expect to be in 5 years. You can still find jobs here but there's alot of drivers out there looking. So a clean record is a must. This field is just like any other field when it comes to being trained. Once you learn alot of different types of equipment then the better opportunities you have. If all you want to do is haul frieght then you can count on topping off pay wise fairly soon. But if you get into specialized hauling the the pay goes up but then again you really have to search to make sure you get the miles.

When you first start out I would recommend on having at least 6 months pay in the bank. If you have bills coming in like alot of people do then you won't have to worry or get backed into a conner. Keep you record clean with the attitude that it will get you better jobs. Build on all the experience you can and if you run into someone that tells you it's easy and there's not that much to learn get away from them. You can always learn even if you've been driving all your life. Good luck and keep us posted.
