I hone in on the exit that needs doing. Once I do something twice the same path I have it committed to memory for life. The problem is that as the years pass, people insist on rebuilding same into something else entirely. Creating new problems.

I sometimes rely on stories from those who have been there. One stands out perfect, A driver was describing to me over a map on the 76 counter about Hunts Point. My virgin load, first time there ever. God help me. There was one thing that old driver did over and over. Pound the table and told me to listen carefully. There are two subway poles in the street. I will have to do a 40 mph Offset on them to the right in the night when I see the first one.

I come down that street and there was the first pole. SURPRISE! But because of the story telling I executed the offset and done. Otherwise I would have smashed into it for not knowing.

This was way before cell, computer and so on. None of that. Just stories, phone calls and index library catalog cards in some truckstops. One 76 near McLean Il, I forget exactly where had one of the best collections ever. A tribal knoweldge so to speak. To access that was to know God in a paraphrasing.

In my plans I also have a alternative path should something disrupt or create problems in the original plan. And a plan C.

ONCE in a while I find myself in a impossible situation. You don't take trucks down certain streets based on appearances. Say 33rd street in baltimore if you google earthed it you will see nothing but high end row houses and projects. Nothing for trucks. But there is one or two places that will take a truck hidden in there. REALLY hidden. Used to be a hulking stadium there too. Eh...

Thats when you do everything you can to learn about the situation before you proceed. Even calling the local lawman or firehall. They would know. And happy to help. BEFORE you do something stupid with that great big rig.

Once in a while despite everything you will get lost. Totally, absolutely and irrevocably lost. If at night you find the edge of the big dipper and locate the north star about a width of your hand above the big pot. Once you find north then you can work out which way you needed to go roughly. Everything else will fall into place. If it's day time? Commit to one direction until you hit a spot to park where you know you are at. Then fix the problem with a phone call or satellite comms or even your own smart phone etc. Remember you have eveyrthing today that we consider science fiction in the 80's amazing.

Don;t ask me about 20 years from now. Its going to be something else.

But we will find a way to get lost.

I've been on this account for about two months, so far so good except I don't get all my 1600 miles yet. I arrive at the stores the night before, go off duty and submit my arrival time then. I personally don't go on duty until I'm done with my first stop. That way I can complete all my appointments and still make it home for the night. At least that's how it's set up here. There is a three truck minimum for the week and I aim for four. The work isn't hard only the pallets of the crystal water, the gallons. Now that I hate. The rollers I've gotten use to and one or two fans is a must. A cooler with some water and a back brace and you have yourself a full day's work out lol. Don't be discouraged and don't break your back. Hope your still hanging in ther .
