Anyone else buy additional vehicles to keep at their terminals?

Many companies will not let a driver use the truck for personal use. And some companies have loaner cars. But they usually have a time limit on them. Couldn't do dinner and a movie cause you'd be gone too long. Having a clunker at the terminal is often the only way to go.

 

I never considered buy a clunker to park somewhere. When I was on the road, if I needed transportation, I'd just rent a car. It only happened a couple of times a year for me, so I figure I was better off that way.

 

My brother who works for the railroad bought a second clunker. He would take trips about 70 miles north of his home yard and instead of being put up in a hotel till he caught a train back he would park his car up there so he could drive it home and then drive back to catch a train back. Ton of driving but being home beats sitting in a hotel. I will have a 40 mile drive from my home to the terminal so if I can bring in enough dough I'd love to do it. Leave the good car with the wife and I'll talk the %#*^box!!!!!!!

 

They have these crazy programs these days called roadside assistance. You can get plans for as little as $8 a month. You can even get them thru your cell provider. Crazy right?

 

BTW I don't plan to get a clunker, but a regular family car with 50K miles on it should suffice.

 

Seems like a giant waste of money when you can rent a car for ~$30 a day. I had to be at a real estate closing once, so I rented a Hyundai Accent in High Point, NC, drove home, signed the papers and drove back. I spent more on gas than the rental.

 

I would love to rent if they were nearby, had truck parking, and open 24/7.

Yep. And they will be there as soon as the get around to it. Right after breakfast, and mid morning coffee break. If they feel like it. I only tried them once, and that was certainly enough. I'm sure it depends on where you are, and how busy they are though.

 

Yes I know, but not open 24/7 or nearby. When I arrive at 8PM they are closed.
